This map shows the number of fixed broadband providers across the U.S.. As you can see, some of the largest counties have a very small source for its inhabitants to get internet from. This says much about giving availability of internet to some of the biggest central hubs of the United States while letting many of the smaller clusters go without this basic necessity.

I really enjoyed looking at the FCC Broadband map. My wife and I are looking at houses, so I wanted to be able to check and see what internet Provider I can expect in the areas that we are looking. I think this is a really useful tool because there are some internet Providers I have never heard of but discovered them with this map. It is also interesting to see what service providers dominate what areas.

At first when I saw the below graphic, I was shocked to see how connected Washington State was. As you can see in the upper left hand corner of the U.S., nearly every county in Washington State has 100% access to broadband. My wife is from Washington, and grew up in a rural area. When she was growing up, they didn't have gas connectivity, or sewer access, but her internet access was comparable to those more well-connected areas of society in the late 1990's to early 2000's. I think that she might not have had as good of an education had she not had it, and she may not be as well-equipped as she is now to work her remote job for an online business.

I was taken aback by both California and Arizona. It's just a little surreal seeing their lack of connection bordering us. I would have never thought they had that little quality connectivity. Honestly feeling the same about California if not even more so. There are a few counties that are well connected but the vast majority of the state is not. I know that some of that has to do with populated areas but not to that degree. Just a bit crazy to see.

I think I was most surprised by the lack of connection in California. California is a huge state and it looks like maybe more than half their state doesn't have broadband internet access. I was also surprised by Arizona and the lack of connection they had as well.

This graphic makes me really wonder why the United States has such high prices for Broadband Data. We know that places like Japan lead the world in tech, and they do this is for 1/3 of the price that we pay for broadband. Perhaps if we lowered the price of data, we could compete with Japan in some of these areas. We are possibly shooting ourselves in the foot in STEAM learning by charging so much for access. It seems like lowering the divide by lowering the cost of data could really benefit society as a whole.

Just as I would have expected, many of the western European countries are strong on the listing but as you go east it lessens which was a surprise to me.

I am sharing this graphic showing the higher educated individuals are more likely to use the internet. I was not surprised that the more educated a person was the more likely they are to use the internet. This makes logical sense to me as many individuals are REQUIRED to use the internet during the educational process for research, homework, online courses, and for their careers. The lecture pointed out that one of the gaps in the digital divide comes from people simply not knowing how to use the internet. It makes sense that individuals grow more comfortable with using the internet after they have used it for schooling and will thus continue to use it even when they have finished receiving their education. I was surprised that the gap was relatively small throughout every country between the more educated individuals and those with less education. It seems education isn't a HUGE impact on internet use.

For the most part most people in the world have access to the internet. We are able to connect in ways we never though we could. Depending on where you live there is only so much you can do with it. In the USA we are a lot of free will to do what we want with our internet access but other country don't have that same freedom. I think it is interesting that South Korea has the highest percentage with 98% of people saying they use the internet at least occasionally or owning a smartphone. I also forget how tech focus South Korea is.

this website had two data sets, one was just a general where in the us did people have access, and this one is how well the access is working for the people. it is shockingly different. the areas that are grey here, meaning that the internet access works slowly and inconsistently are colored the darkest color on the other map. so just because people technically have access to internet does not mean that it is actually working.

This map regarding the digital divide specifically related to broadband was insane to me. It mentions that the FCC claims 24.7M people do not have the broadband capacity it should. Also Microsoft data claims that 162.8M people do not use the internet at broadband speeds. I like how in our professors discussion he mentioned that you have access, cost, and skill. So does this mean that even though Americans have "access" are they using it efficiently? I thought this was very thought provoking.

This was really fascinating to me. Essentially, cities that earn more money, have access to higher internet speeds. I think this is where economics comes into play--rural places do not have as much of a need for technological growth as larger cities. To see it like this is really fascinating.

This chart caught my eye. It shows a correlation line between smart phone ownership and GDP per capita. There is a strong relationship between those things. The chart shows that wealthier countries tend to have more smart phone owners than those in low income countries.

This is a pretty interesting map. This definitely says a lot about the digital divide. The biggest thing I see is that access to better technology and faster internet is largely determined by population density and wealth concentration. If you live in a more remote area or far away from a big technology hub like New York or Silicon Valley you likely will have slower internet and older technology. Even in a huge tech industry area like Dallas, TX, where I grew up, they have less internet speed on average than the bigger cities do. So urbanization and industrialization have a lot to do with internet access and the digital divide.

I checked out the FCC Broadband map and I thought it was pretty cool. When my husband and I moved into our house 3 years ago, we only had one (lousy) option of internet provider, so of course it's what we did because we need it. Through looking at this map, I've been able to see there now are many more options that look to be faster and better for our needs! I think it's really cool you can look up pretty much anywhere in the USA to see what broadband options are out there.

This is a map of the global internet usage across many countries. The digital divide is portrayed on two levels. The first is that the their is a large gap between developed countries and those that are rural. The percentages represent those that report owning a cellular phone. For the US, we reported a whopping 90%. In comparison, India reported 38%, Kenya 48%, and Tunisia 59%. The second digital divide is in age. For rural countries, teens and young adults are more likely to report having a cellphone versus the elderly. The gap in age shows that although rural countries may have access and speed, they may lack in skill.

This is the most current map I could find on the internet of the digital divide in 2022. It shows us that we have come a long way, but still have a long way to go. I am grateful to live in an area that offers me connections with people and opportunities via broadband/internet. During the pandemic which I believe we are finally coming out of, so many students were not able to have a stable connection to the internet, allowing them to fully participate in online learning that was offered. I hope the powers that be can see the need and bring to fruition the hope of many to be connected whether they have high income or otherwise.

Out of all the links and images this specific map caught my eye. One of the key points in the digital divide is the lack of access. When looking at this image it made me realize how each country is impacted so differently by the internet. Hopefully in the future with more advancements being made we can get the internet to countries that don't have access and can't afford technology so that it can help kids with their education, people get jobs, and so much more.

I chose this picture to represent the Digital Divide because I was shocked at the areas that didn't have access to rural broadband. This picture clearly shows that there are many areas in the United States that aren't perfect and need help to reach everyone. I think it shows the need for access because there are large contrasts between Washington and Arizona. While Washington has many spots that are at 100%, Arizona doesn't have a single spot that is over 60%. This picture shows that even large countries like the United States still have a long ways to go.

I think the rest of this module is going to be very interesting. I'm already surprised to see how much more we have to grow in regards to broadband!! I mean, just take a look at Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada for starters.
