So transitioning from one language to another was especially difficult when it came to reading. I remember my teacher having many students who only spoke Spanish, and so she would read the same book both in English and Spanish. They made me read some phrases as well as passages from books. My teacher talked to us about reading levels the following week and told us where we stood individually. When it came to my reading level, I felt slightly nervous to hear my results, but I was reading above a third-grade level, to my surprise. My teacher, Mrs. Williamson, made us create poems on whichever topic we chose. After writing the poems, we collectively decided on a poem from a list we wanted to resit for our school audition. Along with two other classes from my school, our class went to the Peach Blossom Festival. This included reading books assigned by my teachers, but also fiction books. I had study hall during my seventh-period class, and I usually always had my work finished to begin reading. I hated writing essays my freshman year. This had a lot to do with my English teacher leaving halfway through the year, so we got stuck doing reading logs and other mundane writing assignments. In my senior year, I had an excellent English teacher who made me excited to go to class and read George Orwell and then write an in-depth essay. Before, when I was reading and writing, I was not completely enthusiastic about subjects. When you get to college, you can pick the classes you want and the ones that seem interesting. Finding new articles about how to help students break down a document or use critical thinking in your specific subject.
