Holden goes downstairs to the lavender room and thinks about his younger sister Phoebe, whom he views to be genuine and sincere. He thinks she is too emotional, though.

Holden goes to a club and has some drinks. He starts judging the other patrons for their appearance and conversations. He meets his brothers old girlfriend. He says he feels sorry for her and thinks she is disingenuous.

Holden walks back to his hotel. He thinks about how someone stole his gloves and imagined if he knew who took them. He thinks about how he would find them and get his gloves back, but he knew he wouldn't punch them on account of his yellow. He brought a prostitute back with his and gave her 5 dollars, despite her asking for 10. He was to depressed t have sex in the end.

Sunny and the guy from the elevator came back to Holden's room to take the extra 5 dollars. Holden tries to stand his ground and gets beaten up for running his mouth.

Holden checked out of the hotel and locked his back in a locker near the park. He went to get breakfast and had a conversation with 2 nuns about Romeo and Juliet.

Holden tries to buy a record for his sister. On his way he buys 2 tickets to a show that he can watch with Sally. He heard a boy singing a song as he went past which made him happy. He talked to a girl about his sister Phoebe and helped her with her skates. He talks about the museum, and his experiences there.

Went to the show with Sally. She took him ice skating afterwards and then he calls her a pain in the ass after she doesn't want to run away with him.

Holden thinks about calling Jane and recalls seeing her at a dance with a guy. Holden doesn't like him but she defends him by saying he has an inferiority complex.

Holden goes for a drink with Carl Luce. He keeps asking about Carl's sex life and gets called immature. Carl suggest seeing a psychoanalyst.

Holden stays at the bar and gets steaming drunk. He pretends to have been shot and goes out to call Sally. He then goes inside to the bathroom and collapses on the floor.

Holden heads home and meets the new elevator boy. He goes into his apartment and sneaks into Phoebes room. He then remembers that Phoebe likes to sleep in D.B.'s room. They talk for a while and then Phoebe becomes upset upon learning that Holden got kicked out of Pencey.

Holden tells Phoebe how much he hated Pencey. They had an argument and Phoebe got upset. Holden thinks about how he wants to be a catcher in the rye.

Holden calls his old English teacher Mr. Antolini and arranges to stay there for the night. He goes back and starts dancing with Phoebe. Holden leaves once his mum comes home and heads over to Mr. Antolini's place.

Holden arrives at Mr. Antolini's place and is welcomed in. He and Mr. Antolini had a long conversation about school and all of the girls in Holdens life. Eventually, Holden goes to sleep only to awake to Mr. Antolini patting his head. Holden is frightened and quickly leaves the apartment.

Chapter 25

Holden gets his bags from the station and sleeps there overnight. He becomes very depressed after reading a magazine. He walks around the city in the morning, and starts thinking about how he wants to run away. He takes a note to Phoebe's school telling her to meet him by the museum to say goodbye. When he gets to the school he sees some graffiti that says "Fuck you" and this makes him depressed. He gives his note to someone to give to Phoebe and he leaves to wait by the museum. When she gets there she has all of her bags to come with her. He turns her down and she gets upset again, so he takes her to the zoo. They go to the carousel afterwards and Holden watches Phoebe go round and round, admitting that he is warried about her falling but leaves her to make her own mistakes.

Chapter 26

Holden tells us about how he's now seeing a psychoanalyst and how he's going to a new school in the fall. He says he doesn't know if he will apply himself in his new school, but he thinks he does. The book ends with a quote "don't every tell anybody anything. If you do, you'll start missing everybody."
