I really like 13, 14, 15, 19, 21. I think compositionally and technically they came out well. It is quite hard to pick a favourite, but I find myself particularly drawn to 21. The objective, straight-on viewpoint alongside the overcast lighting and simple environment really draws the eye to the bike and could encourage the viewer to question the narrative here due to the lack of environmental context. In that sense, when 21 is by itself, it might suggest a melancholy loneliness. However, when sequenced next to the other images I’ve taken, it feels as though there is a strong narrative of abandonment or a sense of a departed presence, it suggests a more eerie undertone.

Although it was a short shoot, I really enjoyed taking these photos. I found it very relaxing and freeing to just walk and take photos of anything that caught my eye without any prior planning. I wandered around the university campus and tried to explore areas that I hadn’t been to before to find more interesting subject matter. As a guide for this shoot, I tried to incorporate some of the compositional styles I could remember from the previous year and experimented with leading lines, centring, balancing, altering viewpoints, close cropping, sensory, intrigue and reflections in my images. During the shooting process, I struggled trying to focus my photos as I am used to operating a Pentax ME Super with a split circle focus screen. In certain lighting or with heavily shadowed subject matter, it was hard to see if the cross-microprism focus screen on the K1000 was course or clear. I like how the images present a ghostly but strangely peaceful depiction of a previous human presence. I like that they may leave the viewer feeling unsettled but also perhaps intrigued to understand more about this environment. I really enjoy this style of photography and capturing lived outdoor spaces in this way feels like an extension of portraiture, which is a style I am most passionate about. At a first glance, image 7 is a photograph of a shed, but on closer inspection the primary focus is on the couple in the reflection of the window. I like the idea of this photo; it is an interesting and different way to capture people and the reflective element of this image makes the viewer feel almost voyeuristic. However, I feel as though the composition of the window within the frame isn’t visually pleasing and if I were to do this again, I would utilise the window frame itself to act as framing for the couple. I would also prefer the couple to take more of a presence within the image, the focus is meant to be on them but they are visually quite hard to see. I was excited to do this after the practice shoot because it allowed me to develop on the ideas I had. I decided to create different sequences of categorised images inspired by Taryn Simon, a photographer I looked at last year, and how she displays her photographs. I planned my images before I took them and, as a self-portrait of myself, I wanted to produce a series of five sets of four photographs. The first displaying my presence e.g a photo of my dining table during the card game Cambio, my friend dancing in the top that I made, my bed and a photograph of my chest of drawers with personal items. The second showing my desk in its different stages of uses, e.g. one after I’ve tidied, one after I’ve done university work, one after getting ready for a party and one after doing the crossword over FaceTime with my mum. The third being flat lays of my belongings e.g. my jewellery, my bag, my bullet journal and my sewing equipment. The fourth being photographs of my closest friends, I wanted them to be laughing to display the most authentic expression of my relationship with them. It took a while for me to get my head around the timings and the equipment, but I think this will improve as I make more prints in the future. I think I struggled with the process because I have only ever used Photoshop to process digital images, so working with film in a dark room was very different to what I am used to. When editing my digital photographs, I make a lot of very small changes to the contrast and exposure and keep tweaking until I am happy with the final product. However, this is a lot more instantaneous than the developing process in the dark room. I found it hard adjusting to the longer times between altering the contrast and exposure and then seeing the results from these changes, and then trying to work out what changes need to be made to get the image closer to how I’d like it to look. For this image, I tried out different exposures and contrasts and decided to go for a relatively low contrast, softer exposure. Photos 3 and 4 were taken outside using the light of a streetlamp, but they came out very dark. I think with this low lighting condition, the ISO of my film should have been 800 or 1600, so I would like to try this again in the future but with a higher film speed to see how the outcome differs. Additionally, photos 15, 23 and 24 are quite blurred, in regard to both the shutter speed and focus. I think these would have come out better if I had used a faster shutter speed, so the camera could freeze their candid movements, and a smaller aperture, so there would be a deeper depth of field and a larger plane of focus to accommodate for the movement from my model to ensure they were in focus.

I like the composition within the images and although there is some environmental context, the shallow depth of field encourages the viewer to focus on the desk itself. I wanted to position this sequence in a row to encourage the viewer to look at each photo one after another to emphasise a sense of narrative. I wanted these images to convey a passing of time and thereby suggest an echo of my presence. I think they achieved this, however I do wish that I’d had a tripod to take these images so there would be composition continuity between every photograph. Instead, I used a pen on the floor as a marker of where to stand and held my camera close to my chest to try and emulate a tripod as best I could. As I understand it documentary photography is reflective of real life, it captures the truth through an objective lens. It seeks to not only show us the world and society, but it can also encourage us to question and challenge the ideas intertwined in our reality. It is commonly used in reporting, but it also works to highlight aspects of ordinary life that might usually be overlooked. There are strong associations between documentary photography and grainy, black and white visual language due to photography first being used as a method to record and document. This has meant that black and white photographs connote a sense of truthfulness, and it will be interesting to see how these associations could impact or change the way the black and white photos I take for this module could be interpreted. During the lecture it was also discussed that the line between documentary photography and art photography is becoming blurred and that through different styles, editing, compositions and equipment, images could fit into either category. Documentary photography can extend beyond Henri Cartier-Bresson’s notion of ‘the decisive moment’, where the photographer’s eye, the camera and a real-world scene align at the exact right time and are captured spontaneously. Lawson’s work uses different photographic visual language to display identity, intimacy, love, community and different personal and social histories, particularly in black culture, through the use of her models and environment. Her photographs are very gentle and are often set in a personal environment, but through composition and her subjects positioning, they also suggest feelings of liberation and power. I was specifically drawn to her image titled “Binky and Tony Forever”. I recognised the photograph from the album artwork of “Freetown Sound”, an album made by one of my favourite artists Blood Orange. 
 
This album is a personal reflection on the artist’s experiences, and he wrote on Instagram “my album is for everyone told they're not black enough, too black, too queer, not queer the right way, the under appreciated” and collaborated with a range of female artists who may also have been under appreciated. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said 
“I think women are so powerful. Not just in the fact that I genuinely prefer female voices—that is a big part of it—but there’s also a particular power that women can put across that men just can’t”, and I think this resonates perfectly with the message Lawson presents in this photograph.
 
This image depicts a young man and women softly hugging in a bedroom. They are positioned in the centre of the frame, however I find that the main focus is towards the women and her relationship with the male subject rather than a balance between the two. She has direct contact with the camera, which gives her a powerful agency and suggests that this is her space, and it centres around her love. This is further strengthened by their poses, she is stood and visually taller than him within the frame, whereas he is seated with his face half covered by her arm. This could highlight his vulnerability and suggest that herself and her love is supporting him. That being said, the soft nature of their embrace makes their relationship seem tender and equal, it insinuates that although this is framed from her perspective, they do respect and gather comfort from one another. Lawson’s aim with this photo was to capture physical intimacy and I think she has achieved this very well, not only with the couple’s body language, but also with her choice of environment. 
 
She has photographed the subjects in a bedroom with a deep depth of field so that every detail within the image is in focus. While this provides the viewer with context and an insight into the couple’s life and identities, it also suggests that the environment is as equally important as the subjects in her display of intimacy. The windows suggest that the photo has been taken at night, but Lawson has used warm, diffused lighting which feels very homely and natural. This is also reflected in the image’s colour scheme; it has warm and orange tones throughout making this image feel very inviting and nostalgic. This warm imagery, however, has been juxtaposed with Lawson’s technical use of a large format camera. This equipment alongside the staged nature of the subjects, makes the set up of this image feel quite formal and slightly confrontational. It is as though the viewer is made to feel like a spectator of this intimacy, that they are viewing a personal moment in a very personal space. I think this is what is most effective about this image, although it has been staged and curated, there is still a truthful sense of connection between the two subjects due to their body language and visual aesthetics.
 
I find it particularly interesting how this image was originally produced as a photographic form of documentation but has been re-contextualised as an artistic piece for an album. Considering how a photograph’s physical context can change its meaning and connotations could be useful for later in my project when selecting photos for my brief. It will encourage me to think about how the meanings of my images might alter when sequenced alongside other photos and how this might change further when placed within the context of a final series to be exhibited on a wall.

I like its objective nature and how it gives particular aspects of life the opportunity to be observed for extended periods of time, when in everyday life they may not be given a second glance. I think I would like to experiment with this style of photography in the future, however at the moment I think my personal photographic style and interest is more aligned to stylistic forms of portraiture. So instead of a complete focus on documentary photography, I might try to incorporate its objective, visual qualities within my own portraiture and photography as a way to develop my work whist sticking to my personal style. One visual element I would like to experiment with would be flash. They all suggest notions of going beyond and experiencing something further than the physical level, the ordinary or conceptual sphere. Additionally, when examining different styles of art photography, the lecture focused closely on the chapters in Charlotte Cotton’s book “The Photograph as Contemporary Art”. It was produced by Adam Fuss, a photographer born in London in 1961. This photograph is part of a series titled ‘My Ghost’ and it explores personal feelings of silent grief and loss. This collection of images express the traces of a loved one who is no longer physically present in a person’s life, but they still live on as an emotional and physical presence. Fuss created this series using an archaic photographic method, the daguerreotype. Developed in the 19th Century, this process doesn’t use negatives to create an image, instead “the photographic image is etched by light-sensitive chemicals onto a silver-coated plate, the areas where the light most strongly hits the plate becoming frosted”. Each image is therefore unique and can only be copied, not recreated. I think Fuss using this method to capture his series really emphasises the intended message of his work. Using an old photographic technique encourages a sense of nostalgia and memory. Furthermore, the very specific nature of the daguerreotype process is very reflective of how a memory is unique and cannot be recreated, especially with someone who is no longer present, instead they can only be relived through the mental replaying and copying of that memory. I really like how he put thought into his choice of photographic equipment and utilised its qualities as a way to aid his projects meaning. It is very effective and has inspired me to consider and carefully select my choice of equipment and techniques in future shoots as a way to aid the creation of meaning in my own work.
 
What really draws me to this image is how abstract it is, although you can still see that the subject is a person, their face is obscured and their body is blurred. Their lack of identity really causes the viewer to look closer at this photograph to understand who the subject could be and what the context is. Before researching this series, the visual qualities of this photo really reminded me of a medical x-ray or the inverted photo effect on Photoshop. To me, these visual prompts suggest that this person feels ghostly and exposed, similar to how an x-ray displays the body in a way that isn’t seen in normal life, it shows the inner physical self and reveals the skeletal structure which is only seen after death. The inverted aspect of this may also infer that this subject’s feelings have overwhelmed their body and self, they are no longer contained within, they have been inverted and are all-consuming. This is further emphasised by the colour palette, this photo contains different shades of blue with white accents and for me, blue has associations with sorrow. Although this image doesn’t feel eerie or have immediate signs of struggle, which could also be through the calming connotations I also have with the colour blue, this person does seem oddly trapped within themselves. This is accentuated through the photograph’s composition; the subject has been centred within the frame with space surrounding their upper body. This empty space provides no context to the environment and makes the image feel more isolating and lonely. To me, the combination of the discussed visual aspects within this image indicates strong themes of detachment and loss. 
 
I think Fuss visually expressed his concept very well because, as mentioned, the analysis above was deduced before researching this series. I really felt feelings of loss looking at this image. I think it’s a very powerful photograph and I would really like to see a series in this style but focusing on multiple subjects and their experiences with similar emotions. It could also be interesting to see how altering the visual language of this image, such as changing the colour palette or having a close crop, could change its connotations and therefore impact a person’s understanding of the photograph.

Both his projects, ‘The Island Position’ and ‘Low Relief’ really appealed to me visually and aesthetically. I love the colours and composition of the urban environments in ‘The Island Position’ and I found his technique and style when capturing city surfaces in ‘Low Relief’ really intriguing due to their abstract nature. Much like how Adam Fuss’ ‘My Ghost’ photograph is so abstract it almost seems computer generated, ‘Low Relief’ looks like it could have been produced through layering multiple images in Photoshop. In my previous photography work, I have been very experimental with editing in Photoshop. I like to layer, manipulate, distort and montage my photographs and I find it particularly inspiring that Fuss and Lehrs have achieved similar effects, but during the shooting process rather than afterwards. I assumed that because this module was focused on film photography with no editing, I wouldn’t be able to do any experimental editing. That being said, I was really struggling to come up with a concept or shoot ideas as none of my friends were free for another portraiture shoot. Instead, I thought I might try a more documentative approach and capture an essence of my local area by photographing anything that caught my eye whilst on a walk. I was hoping this would allow me to get to grips with the camera and also give me further inspiration as the shoot went on, but I didn’t connect to this idea and nothing seemed to jump out as visually interesting. I also struggled with the camera at certain points. I wanted to capture the dappled lighting on a house when the sunlight was strong, but the time it took to take an external meter reading, input the settings into the camera and get the correct composition due to the flipped image when looking through the viewfinder, the sunlight had already disappeared. I haven’t tried this style properly before, but I do find the modern, minimal aesthetic of this sub-genre particularly pleasing. I thought this style might be easier to achieve with this camera’s reflected view because I could take my time and use the angled lines of the buildings as a guide within the viewfinder. I still found it quite difficult, particularly when trying to take portrait images because everything was flipped upside down, so that reason I only took landscape photos. I also realised part way through that my light meter had slipped and the ISO was set to 800 rather than 400. I think this is why some of my images have different levels of exposure and this mistake will definitely make me a lot more careful when I use the light meter again in the future. Alongside these images, I wanted to photograph the professionals working in Canary Wharf in a deadpan style taking inspiration from the previously mentioned Joshua Cowan and Mette Tronvoll. I wanted to produce a series of paired images showcasing ‘the person vs the environment’ to express the character of this business district, but I was quite nervous to do so because I have never asked a stranger if I could take their photo. However, I didn’t end up taking any portraits because I was approached by a security guard and who told me I couldn’t take photos around that area, so I left soon after. I photographed foliage (5), taking the first frame out of focus with a close crop and the second frame in focus from further away. I’m happy with how this came out, both exposures are evident and it makes the subject matter slightly less recognisable at first glance. I also tried a double exposure with foliage overlayed with a clean, modern building to produce a juxtaposition between the two frames (17). However, this one didn’t work as effectively as the previous double exposure because the details of the foliage are barely visible. Overall, I really like the double exposure feature, the visual characteristics generated by this technique are similar to the effects produced by the layering tool in Photoshop. I would like to develop my skillset in this method during future shoots because I think it’s a perfect tool to achieve the real-time editing that I discussed before. I would just need to research this technique and how best to approach it and plan out my images and ideas before shooting to ensure all my photographs come out successfully.

That being said, I do think some of the images have turned out well. My favourite is 12, the image I printed, due to composition. The combination of rounded and straight leading lines and varying building heights create a sense of rhythm within the image. It seems almost 3D due to the perspective, and this is only emphasised by the direct sunlight producing depth through the highlights and shadows. His photos are positioned on the right of my mood board and the majority of his work explores his relationship to the United Kingdom through landscapes and portraiture. He uses mostly medium and large format in his photography and I think this relates well to his concept. His use of traditional photographic equipment makes his work feel more authentic and sentimental, echoing the feelings and connection you have towards the place you are from and how this can build a sense of identity. 
 
The photos I have chosen all show the subject at the centre of the frame and the majority have a closer crop with a shallow depth of field. These techniques ensure the focus is on the model and I feel as though the combination of these elements allow the viewer to feel connected and closer to the subject. Furthermore, these images have a somewhat objective quality to them. Muncey uses neutral, diffused lighting and situates most of his photos within a studio environment. His models have a casual but staged posture and his camera position changes between face on or being at a slightly low angle. Although his images seem objective through these elements, they hold a sense of subjectivity and his portraiture feels very personal. I feel as though the neutral aspects of these photos encourages the viewer to examine smaller details within the frame to gain an understanding of what is being communicated. The shallow depth of field and lack of environment guides the audience to formulate a narrative from subtle facial expressions and body language instead of external factors. This, in turn, forms a stronger emotional connection between the viewer and subject due to the close exploration into the photograph’s visual elements. 
 
From the photos I selected from his portfolio, three are self-portraits and the black and white photo at the bottom is of a stranger, but I would like to know how many of the other subjects are strangers. I wonder this because every model seems so comfortable and relaxed, there seems to be a sense of closeness between the subject and photographer and I think this really elevates his work. I intend to photograph my friends for this shoot because I would really like to achieve an intimate and tender relationship between my subjects as he has done in his portraiture. I think it will really help the viewer to relate emotionally to my photographs because they will be able to sense and relate to this intimacy. 
 
Overall, I am very inspired by the clean, crisp, editorial aesthetic of his portraiture. I think I want to use similar technical and compositional elements in my shoot because they produce really effective visual language. Additionally, I love that he can capture the emotion and identity of a person without needing the background to provide context. Even when he does use an outdoor environment as the setting for his portraiture, I like that he juxtaposes the natural flora with a pose that feels unusually fixed for a setting so gentle. However, I also included other photographer’s work within this mood board because I want to incorporate more editorial poses within my shoot. I want to experiment with objective and editorial qualities to see which style I resonate with the most so I can develop my personal, photographic style.

I wanted to use this lens, as opposed to a 35mm, to emphasise a sense of intimacy between my subjects through its smaller field of view. Additionally, after using the Mamiya 645, I thought the K1000 would be more suitable for this shoot. I needed a camera that I could manoeuvre, frame and capture in portrait orientation easily and I found these aspects of the medium format particularly challenging. That being said, after looking at the final images, I feel as though the dimensions of the medium format image might have been more effective for some of the more objective portraits. I think that images 2, 3, 4, 5, 15, 16 seem to be lacking something. I’m not sure if it’s because they are situated alongside more interestingly posed photos in the contact sheet, or if it’s my framing, or if it’s the dimensions of the film, but there is something about them that I don’t love. I also took three photos on my terrace where harsh light shone through a window and cast shadows onto my wall to see how this might alter the effect of the image.   On the original shoot I also managed to capture some pictures outside in a natural environment, but this shoot was going so well I didn’t manage to get around to this. I actually wish I’d had another roll of film so I could have re-taken these photos as well as more photos of my models together. However, I took the same approach as last time and I either directed their positioning or asked my models to look at my mood board and take inspiration from poses that connected to them. I wanted them to have a certain level of agency in these photographs and it was important to me that they felt confident and comfortable in front of the camera so this would further translate in the final images. To aid with this, I also took inspiration from Muncey and played music throughout the shoot and counted down as I took the photo so they wouldn’t be caught off guard. I selected them based on how they visually looked next to each other, but after reflecting on them, I think coupling up these images adds new and different narrative to each set, elevating the original stand-alone photos. For example, ‘set A’ could infer an acceptance of loss. In the first photo model 1 is holding and supporting herself, but she seems comfortably assured with this. However, the second photo could suggest that perhaps previously she had someone else to support and hold her, someone she shared a close relationship with. The fact that model 1 doesn’t acknowledge model 2’s presence makes it feel as though this image represents a memory, especially as model 2 isn’t in the first photo. However, model 2’s eye contact and her positioning behind model 1, makes it known to the viewer that she is still present, even if just emotionally at the back of model 1’s mind. I couldn’t create any connections between my mind map ideas, so instead of using written prompts to formulate concept ideas, I decided to look for visual prompts on Instagram and photography websites. I started screenshotting any images that caught my eye and I saved them into a folder on my laptop. From there, I grouped visually similar images and arranged them on different slides on a PowerPoint to create various mood boards. After this, I compared and connected these images to the ideas on my mind map to come up with new shoot ideas. This process was a lot more successful than just using my mind map and I think it’s because I am more of a visual person and respond better to physical images. 
 
I created a new mind map to demonstrate new concept and shoot ideas. I also colour coordinated my different ideas to the corresponding photographic mood boards.

His photography explores multiple exposure, colour, lighting and long exposure to create visually dynamic and abstract portraiture on film. I really like the photo he captured for an album titled ‘fire in the deep end’. He used a Mamiya RB67 and utilised the camera’s double exposure function to create this photo. I like his use of coloured lights and I think it’s a really effective way to emphasise a contrast and highlight the details between the two frames. Additionally, I love that he has specifically chosen these colours to compliment the theme in the album title, red could be symbolic of fire and the light blue could represent water. When photographing his model, he also used a fan and made sure his model was relaxed to make it seem as though she was floating in water. Furthermore, in this final image there are visible traces of dust which haven’t been removed from the negative during exposure. I’m unsure whether this is deliberate, but I think it adds to the underwater quality he is trying to emulate because it looks like things are floating within the image much like small debris floats in water. His attention to detail and forward planning really elevates this image and this is something I want to bring to my future shoots.
 
I also find the composition of this photograph very captivating. I was immediately drawn to the model’s eye, which has been positioned at the centre of the frame, and from there I followed round the shapes of her face and body to build the rest of the image. Her direct eye contact is very hypnotic and forms an emotional connection to the viewer, but the shadows concealing the rest of her face add an element of mystery and may make the viewer unsure of who they are connecting to. This may encourage the viewer to take a closer look and study the rest of the image to understand what is being displayed. His use of lighting to hide and reveal specific elements of this image is not only an effective way to build intrigue, but it also gives the image depth. The light and dark areas make it seem as though there is a foreground, middle-ground and background, which is only further emphasised by the model’s hands which are both reaching towards and away from the camera. 
 
As mentioned, Wangner took this photo with the brief of creating an image for an album’s artwork, and this could actually be an effective alternative method for concept development. Considering that I have recently been struggling to come up with a theme for my work, if I am ever stuck in the future it could be an interesting to produce a shoot in response to an album I enjoy as a way to generate a new concept for my work.

I came across two videos which were especially helpful, not only because they included the RB67, but one of these videos was also made by my artist inspiration Jake Wangner. One aspect that was brought up in both videos was paying attention to the light and dark areas within the images. As the name suggests, double exposure exposes the same frame of film twice and wherever there are shadows within the first image, it will be as though these areas were never exposed, therefore meaning lighter areas of the second image will show significantly through these dark spaces. After finding this out, I was concerned that my light and dark areas might not be contrasted enough to achieve effective double exposures because I wasn’t going to be using a studio setting with access to powerful lighting equipment. Additionally, in keeping with this theme, I used natural, diffused lighting and photographed her against a plain, white background to emphasise an angelic quality. It is for this reason I also decided not to use a tripod, I wanted to make sure that my photographs didn’t seem rigid or fixed. I experimented with different camera settings to take focused, moving or out of focus photos of the flowers to see how these would come out in the double exposures. Additionally, I altered both the positioning of my camera and the composition of my model within the frame to ensure that there was enough visual interest in the final images. I didn’t want to feel as though the photos where my model had neutral poses were lacking something like in shoot three and I think doing so made my images a lot more successful. For photo 7 I tried a technique I had seen on TikTok where someone had applied Vaseline to their lens filter to create a soft focus, blurred effect on their photos. To ensure I didn’t damage the lens, I carefully put clingfilm over the front of the camera and placed a small amount of Vaseline onto that. I wanted to emphasise the soft and dreamy theme, however I don’t think it was effective for this shoot because the double exposure does a good job of achieving this on its own. In A-level photography I physically wrote on my images after printing them out and I loved the outcome of this, so I thought writing on acetate would be an alternative, real-time method to achieve a similar effect. I liked the idea of either drawing faces to depict the out of body feeling that can occur during dissociation or writing thoughts and emotions. This is why I also wanted to try experiment with strong, focused beams of light and utilise the shutter speed to blur my model’s faces. I knew I wanted an aspect of this shoot to have a distorted quality and remembered I watched a video of his where he took a self-portrait with a spray-painted acetate sheet in-between himself and the camera as a way to obscure his face. I really like these photographs, I think his technique is really effective and they feel oddly nostalgic and vintage. The texture of the spray paint makes these images feel really old and slightly damaged, this is only emphasised by his neutral expression similar to the posing seen in old photographs. Additionally, these images feel slightly displaced, it’s as though there’s a disconnect or a barrier between the subject and the world, something doesn’t feel quite right. One of my friends practices ballet dancing in her free time and, although it doesn’t link to my dissociation concept, I thought it would be really beautiful to capture her dancing while using this lighting technique. However, there are three that I think are my favourite from the entire shoot, 12, 18 and 25. I think the composition and posing in these are well executed and I think 12 and 18 could work really nicely sequenced together. I recognised very quickly that I was too ambitious with the quantity of photographic ideas I wanted to achieve within a two-hour time frame, and so I decided to drop two of my ideas. Furthermore, I thought its portability would be ideal when creating blurred photos with a long shutter speed. I began with the acetate photos and used a white backdrop to ensure my models and acetate designs would be prominent in the final image. As shown in the photo, I used a background light and a diffused key light and hung my various acetate sheets between my model and camera. I used white spray paint on one sheet and hand drew a face on the other. Additionally, I set up a tripod stand to make sure my camera was stable and the acetate was safely within the frame. However, some of the clips holding the acetate still appeared in shot, so I would need to be a little more vigilant if I were to reshoot this because I feel as though it does take away from the effectiveness of the photos. I used a lighting set up similar to the diagram and I tried to get a soft, circular background light as best I could. Additionally, I used an external light meter so I could control the settings and make sure the exposure focal point was on the white background rather than my model, ensuring a silhouette effect. After pointing my light meter at the background, I also moved my desired aperture down a stop to accommodate for the bright studio lights. I didn’t have enough time to try solve this issue any further, so I decided to take the photos regardless. Although I didn’t like this initially and I was quite disappointed with the result, I now think that the background suggests an interesting visual. to D, which featured multiple models, and G, which focused solely on one model. Trying to choose between these two options was challenging because they both expressed a different perspective to my concept. Using multiple models could represent how dissociation might make you feel as though you aren’t connected to a singular sense of self, or it could perhaps display a narrative of different people’s experiences of dissociation. On the other hand, focusing on a singular model could feel more personal because it could follow the journey of one person and their experiences of dissociation. During weeks four, five and six when I was finding it hard to formulate a concept, I was also struggling with my mental health and feelings of dissociation. Being in this situation reminded me of a YouTube video I watched years ago by the filmmaker Bertie Gilbert called ‘why feeling sad can ultimately be a good thing’. In the video he discusses how he was feeling quite sad and instead of allowing it to consume him, he decided to make a film about how he was feeling. He said that by expressing his emotions, he started to feel better and discussed how he put all the negative energy he was experiencing into making something good, and it inspired me to do the same. I attempted to get the same diffused, circular light on the white backdrop, however, this time I really struggled to accomplish this and I’m slightly disappointed with the angular lighting shape in the photos. That being said, I love the final images and I’m very proud of them. I asked my model to perform three different poses, one matching the image selected for brief five, one where she’s lying face down, and another where she is doing a bow inspired ballet position and its very hard to pick a favourite. I was very aware of the clips holding up the acetate when executing my framing. I was careful and implemented a closer crop to ensure these wouldn’t appear within the photo like last time. I did find this shoot idea a little more difficult than last time and I struggled to draw the face. I think the pressure of knowing this was going to be my final image was affecting me, so I’m not completely satisfied with how the drawing came out. When it came to shooting, I knew I wanted my model looking up towards the face, but I wasn’t sure which kind of pose would be most effective. Similar to the acetate photos, I captured three different poses so I would have multiple choices to pick from, but I think image 18 is my favourite. However, it is one of the extremely overexposed photos and as a result the image is incredibly grainy and this might not have looked good when enlarged onto a bigger piece of paper. That being said, if this photo is considered outside of the context of the brief and on its own, I feel as though the grain may add to its photographic language. To me, this image feels quite disturbing and eerie due to the juxtaposition of the cosy and safe bedroom environment against the rigid and odd body language of my model. Something about this feels very out of place and haunting, as though it’s capturing the ghost-like presence of the person who used to live in this room. I think the grain further emphasises this because it works to obscure my model and its characteristics remind me of when a ghost is caught on camera in a movie and it causes static and disruptions on the recordings. Additionally, the combination of the grainy, faded, black and white visual elements make this image feel like an old documentary photograph, particularly with the long distance between the subject and camera. It feels as though the photographer wasn’t meant to be in this space and captured this image quickly as a means to document the haunting events. I needed to capture an image for brief 4B which had a different photographic language to the double exposure image I had selected for 4A. I planned on asking on my model to perform the same two poses from the double exposure image, but I wanted to capture them from a lot further away and in a different setting. I chose to photograph my model in her bedroom to provide environmental context that my double exposure photo didn’t, I wanted these images to have a more personal and emotional quality. This is also why I decided to use the k1000 35mm camera as opposed to the RB67, I wanted to connect to the viewers’ nostalgic and familiar associations with this kind of photographic format. Additionally, throughout the project I have wanted to experiment with using a flash and, although it was quite risky to attempt this without having tried it before, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to develop my skillset with this technique. The distance between me and my model for most of the images wasn’t greater than two and a half meters, and I think I misread the distance guide and was reading from ‘feet’. This meant I had my aperture on f.22 to have what I thought was the correct exposure because I thought it was three meters for f.22. Due to my confusion with the settings, I took the same photo multiple times with different shutter speeds and noted down the settings to ensure I would have at least one with the correct exposure. Additionally, I was under the impression that the flash would freeze any movement regardless of shutter speed. Therefore, a lot of my images with a shutter speed of 1/15 or slower are really blurred because I wasn’t holding my camera completely steady which is something to consider next time. I was really pleased because I received very positive feedback. People liked the photos and said they could truly feel the emotion in the images despite my models having fairly objective facial expressions. Their feedback and observations were really valuable to me because they pointed out things I hadn’t noticed before. One of my peers suggested how brief two looks quite puppet-like, as if the model is being controlled by something or someone off screen. She also pointed out how the crossing of the arms was echoed in brief five where the model’s legs are crossed. She commented that the model is physically out of the spotlight and doesn’t need to perform anymore and that she looks defeated and exhausted from being controlled. I found this really interesting because I hadn’t noticed the puppet symbolism or the body language being echoed. Furthermore, her interpretation indicates another element of dissociation where you can feel like an object and not in control of your own body because your physical body doesn’t feel like your own. After hearing this, I felt like I had achieved my goal of creating an emotional connection and understanding with the viewer because of the way she had recognised an aspect of dissociation that I hadn’t intentionally expressed in my work.
 
Earlier on in the module I read John Bergers ‘Ways of Seeing’ and he discussed how different contexts in which an image is situated (2008, p.19) or even changing what comes before or after an image could change the images message entirely (2008, p.29). This made me consider how my class’s interpretation of my final project could have changed if I had presented it to them on a screen instead of in person, or if I had sequenced these photos differently. It would be interesting to explore this in future to see if my concept could be understood differently with these small alterations.

I situated my model in her own room and photographed her from further away using a 35mm camera and an external flash. The feelings of safety that are associated with a bedroom environment are juxtaposed against her closed off body language. This is further heightened by the use of flash which makes looking at this image feel very intrusive, as if the viewer is not welcome in her space. This combination of visual language makes the subject appear defensive and suggests that she doesn’t want the viewer to pry. I feel like the personal connection I had to this concept is reflected through the images and I’m hoping this will emotionally translate to the viewers as well.
 
I chose these models in particular because I thought they would be able to aid in this viewer connection. All the people pictured are close friends of mine and I wanted this closeness to be expressed through their body language and sense of comfort in the hopes that the viewer would pick up on this closeness and gain a greater understanding of my message. 
 
Visually, aside from brief four B, I wanted to keep the tones in all the photos fairly flat. I wanted this to represent the emotionless and two-dimensional feeling that occurs during dissociation. Furthermore, this is why I selected the studio as the setting for these images, I wanted to highlight the fake and detached nature of this experience. Through these visual codes, technical approaches and the posture of my subjects, I wanted to create a narrative and a visual of the feelings and experiences I have during a dissociative episode.
