Rationale

Why is this topic relevant to students?
I have chosen my final project to focus in ecosystem services. I like the idea of teaching my students on how dependent humans and animals are within their habitats. My rationale in selecting this specific topic is because teaching this lesson and introducing my young students to different habitats within planet earth, will prepare them to study animal species more in depth. For example, endangered species and the impact humans have within the ecosystems. My plan is for my students to learn about the different habitats and be critical thinkers of the impact that we make in planet earth. I believe my students will be interested in learning about animals.
Why does it matter to them?
Studying habitats is meaningful for my students to value the lives of animals. This topic selection, I believe, is relevant for my students because some of them might hear about the animal endangered species within the news on television, others might be familiar with different animals when they visit the zoo, and currently, the weather change and how this is affecting animal species. It is important for my students to have an understating on how to protect these species. This topic is also relevant to the students because younger students are observers of their surroundings, and I believe it is important for them to learn about the ecosystems around them

Then students will fill out the worksheet what is habitat? Once the students have completed this assignment I will gather them to the carpet to listen to the story The Lorax by Dr. Seus. Another discussion about the impact that humans have within the environment will take place at the carpet. This will be the closing activity for the first day. Values thinking is applied to this lesson.
