Big Ben is one of the most important monuments in London. 

It was built after the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834, but it seems that there was a kind of clock tower even in the Middle Ages.

In 2017 the largest and most extensive conservation of the Elizabeth Tower begins to preserve the clock tower for future generations.

The street is also home to the Abbey Road Studios, the recording studios created in 1931 by EMI, a music industry which can be regarded as a temple of modern music. In fact, in addition to the Beatles, bands of the caliber of Pink Floyd, The Police and Queen have recorded their songs here.

Although there is evidence of scattered settlements in the area, the first major settlement was founded by the Romans about four years after the invasion of AD 43.
Anglo-Saxon and Viking period of London
From around 500, an Anglo-Saxon settlement developed slightly west of the old Roman city. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded that Alfred "refounded" London in 886. Archaeological research shows that there was a revival of life and trade within the old Roman walls. London then grew slowly until about 950.
By the 11th century London was beyond all comparison the largest town in England. Westminster Abbey was one of the grandest churches in Europe.
Middle Ages
After winning the Battle of Hastings William of Normandy was crowned King of England in the newly completed Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. William constructed the Tower of London, the first of the many Norman castles in England to be rebuilt in stone to intimidate the native inhabitants. In 1097 William II began the building of Westminster Hall. The hall became the basis of a new Palace of Westminster.
In 12th century the institutions of central government grew in size and sophistication and became increasingly fixed in one place. The City of London remained England's largest city and principal commercial center and it flourished under the Corporation of London. In 1100 population was around 18,000; by 1300 it had grown to nearly 100,000.
Early modern history
During the 15th and 16th centuries London became big and famous. It saw the rise of Shakespeare's theatre and many crucial political events like the GunPowder  Plot in 1605.
The Great Fire of London broke out in 1666 in Pudding Lane in the city and quickly swept through the wooden buildings.Rebuilding took over ten years.
The 18th century
The 18th century was a period of rapid growth reflecting an increasing national population, when the Industrial Revolution started London's role was getting bigger at the centre of the evolving British Empire.
The 19th century
London was transformed by the coming of the railways. A new network of metropolitan railways allowed for the development of suburbs in neighbouring counties from which middle-class and wealthy people could commute to the centre. From 1863, the first lines of the London Underground were constructed.
One of the most famous events of 19th-century London was the Great Exibition of 1851. Held at The Crystal Palalce, the fair attracted 6 million visitors from across the world and displayed Britain at the height of its Imperial dominance.
