Shortly after, President Truman informed Stalin, who already knew about the project through Soviet espionage. Japan was called to surrender unconditionally or face destruction. Refusing to give in without guarantees Japan ignored the warning. The United States then dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, killing over 150,000 people. The emperor eventually surrendered, marking the end of World War II and the beginning of the nuclear age.
