"The day was ending in a serenity of still and exquisite brilliance. The water shone pacifically; the sky, without a speck, was a benign immensity of unstained light; the very mist on the Essex marsh was like a gauzy and radiant fabric, hung from the wooded rises inland, and draping the low shores in diaphanous folds. Only the gloom to the west, brooding over the upper reaches, became more somber every minute, as if angered by the approach of the sun."

The quote portrays the situation and type of environment Marlow is witnessing. Light usually represents purity, knowledge, bright, positivity, and life. However, as shown in the novel. the white people are "intelligent" but, ironically, they are not pure and good people. They are described as dehumanized which is demonstrated by the unnamed characters. On the other hand, Conrad equates the African American with mystery, savagery, and darkness. The utilization of light and dark functions to contradict the meaning that the readers familiar with.

As Marlow explores, his curiosity leads him to enter what he describes as "deadly like a snake". This description further illustrates that there are something disturbing and evil regarding the Congo river. In other words, as seen by Marlow, the Congo river represents the center of evil. By growing up the river, Marlow witnesses how degraded humanity can be as he encounters the dying natives. Additionally, the snake leads to the heart of darkness that will expose the true evil and savagery in which all men are being tempted by.
