         <description><![CDATA[<div>1619 - a dutch trader brought the first african american to jamestown (virginia) by a slave ship<br><br>1787 - slavery was accepted by the Consitution, and an idealistic movement developed in the north which wished to abolish slavery<br><br>1808 - the slave trade was outlawed and between 10 to 15 million africans were kidnapped and forced into slavery in the enflish colonies of north america<br><br>1861 - civile war started and abraham lincoln was elected  as the president<br><br>1865 - the abolition of slavery and  the freedmen's bureau was established<br><br>1877 - the reconstruction was over<br><br>1896 - the supreme court adopts an amendments that legalised the system based on the statement "separate but equal"<br><br>1909 - the founding of the national association for the advancement of colored people (NAACP)<br><br>1920s  - the 19th amendment  to the U.S constitution is ratified, this amendment gave the women the right to vote. however african-american women resideing in th souther states are barred from voting through poll taxes, literacy tests and grandfather clauses<br><br>1948 - the segregation in the armed forces ended<br><br>1954 - african-american civil rights movement started. surpreme court decided to declare that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional<br><br>1963 - 250 000 protesters took part in the march on washington, the occation of martin luther king's great speech "i have a dream"<br><br>1964 -  the civile rights act was passed, which gave all blacks legal and political equality, ending segregation forever<br><br>1968 - marked the end of the non-violent movement that begun in the 1950s, martin luther king was assassinated<br><br>1992 - los angeles riots also known as the rodney king riots, the south carolina riots.<br><br>2001 - colin powell became the first african-american secretary of state<br><br>2008 - barack obama became he first african-american president in the united states of america<br><br>2014 - the year police brutality went viral in furgeson, because of the death of erik garner by the NYPD<br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>
