A 62 year old patient at a rehab facility in Pierce County was receiving care for severe frostbite of both feet. The patients feet were necrotic and right foot was only connected to the body by a tendon. The nurse caring for the patient used scissors to cut the patients tendon and amputated the foot as an act of compassion.

The nursing code of ethics #4 non-maleficence was obviously violated. The nurse is to do no harm. This code of ethic also states that the principle of non-maleficence ensures the safety of the patient.

In situations such as this one, of course it makes sense to have compassion for this patient. They are likely experiencing pain and discomfort. However, giving pain medications as ordered and consulting with the patients provider about your concerns would be the appropriate actions. Performing procedures outside of a nurses scope-of-practice has consequences.
