Post 1- Describe the Mediterranean World in 33 CE

The Roman empire at its highest in 117 CE, was the most extensive political and social structure in the Western civilisation. Being a very wealthy empire meant it had the power to rule over everyone. By 285 CE the empire had grown too vast to be ruled from the central government of Rome. So because of this the empire was divided into a western and eastern empire. The ancient Greeks and Romans encountered numerous people from many lands. Some of these people were from a different race but most of them were from different ethnic groups, having different traditions the Greeks and Romans did not share. Most of their prejudice against ethnic groups in ancient Rome and Greece has been based on cultural and social differences not their appearance. The official languages spoken during the time of the Roman Empire was Greek and Latin, as most of its literature studied by Romans was written in Greek and Latin. These are not the only languages spoken as there were many others spoken too. Transportation in ancient Rome and Greece was either using land or sea, as at this time the Roman empire is in the development of creating efficient roads. The mains regions in this time was Rome, Macedonia, Jerusalem, Cyprus, Pisidia, Syria, Thrace and Damascus. These are very important places because these are a part of St Pauls journeys.

Post 2 - the significance of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus

St Paul's conversion was very significant as he had a great devotion to the Jewish laws and traditions. Saul at one point became the worst enemy of Christians. He would imprison them and have them killed. St Paul had a very privileged life, having following the strict laws and having a Secular education. On his way to Damascus to find the high Priest and the Sanhedrin for commission to allow him to arrest Christians and take them back to Jerusalem for trial. When Saul nearly arrived to the city, he was surrounded with a bright light, so bright it knocked Saul to the ground. Jesus then said "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?" And Saul said, "Who are you, Lord?" And He said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting; but rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." Saul then arose not seeing anything. She was led by hand to Damascus. St Paul's conversion was so significant as coming from a strict background of following the Jewish rules, to devoting the rest of his life spreading the word of lord and converting other people to Christianity

He stopped at the same places he had visited from the fist journey. The reason for this was that he wanted to see how his converted brothers from the first journey were getting on. After this he then visited Derbe, Lystra Iconium for the second time. Also visiting his birth place Tarsus towards the end of the trip.

Post 5 - explain and identify a cultural challenge for Paul that is revealed in one of his epistles.

A cultural challenge for St Paul during his journey was that he found out that in order for Gentiles to become Christian they had to follow the Jewish laws and the way of living. The main law they had to follow at the time was circumcision, meaning the boys needed to be circumcised. Not only this but rituals were to be performed to prove their faith. St Paul did not agree with this as he believed it was not needed to become a Christian. St Paul said no rituals were needed to prove dedication. He believed that salvation comes from believing in Jesus not by the works of the law.

Post 6- *Interpret and *apply one of Paul's messages for us today

One of Paul's messages that stood out to me was “have peace and happiness in your life”, you do this by not boasting to others and being humble, treat everyone equal, trust in honesty and justice and to be strong. These messages affect the society of today as we need peace and happiness in this world, but unfortunately most things are the opposite. Today our society has changed a lot as anyone who is different is not treated the same way or respected the same as others. The modern day society is filled with power and very wealthy, and I see St Paul's message as something the society of today can learn from, by choosing humility other than greed.
