A new neighborhood was built beside a small community pond. Within a few months, the water became cloudy and green. Some residents noticed the pond smelled like rotten eggs and had floating patches of algae. Ducks stopped visiting.
A science club tested the pond water and found high phosphate levels. Several lawns nearby were treated with fertilizers right before a week of heavy rain.

They built a neighborhood behind a pond , they used fertilizers on the houses next to the pond and they never thought to take care of the pond water . Which resulted the pond to have high phosphate levels.

The water in the pond turned cloudy and green, and it smelled bad and had algae on the surface. Ducks stopped coming. The science club found lots of phosphates in the water. The nearby lawns had fertilizers on them before heavy rain. This shows that the water quality got worse after people added fertilizers nearby, which caused the algae and bad smell. The fertilizer runoff probably caused the pond to become polluted.

some of the evidence in the story that indicates that the water qualities has changed are how the pond smelled like rotten eggs and algae was in them and that the pond was also green.

something I could connect between the neighborhood action to the pond was they fertilized there grass and I'm inferencing that when they did that the fertilizer got into the pond due to the heavy rain and because they did not care to think of how the fertilizer would damage the pond.

In the text it says it rained right after they used fertilizer and then the pond started to become cloudy. That would have to mean that the fertilizers used were harmful to the pond so when it rained, the water carried some of that fertilizer down into the pond.
