I just wanted to take a moment to tell you what an honor it is to be your professor! I’ve been praying individually for each of you before you even stepped into this class, and I want you to know, I’m here to help.

My hope is not only that you succeed in this class, but that you leave it feeling confident in your ability to thrive throughout your college journey. I truly believe that each of you was placed in my section of HEL-101 for a reason, and you belong in this class.

In this portal, you’ve explored several aspects of belonging. Belonging is a vital part of the educational journey. It helps students feel included, supported, and respected, which in turn fosters a more effective learning environment (Taylor). One key way to cultivate this sense of support is by listening to and respecting students’ lived experiences (Digital Promise Global).

Transformational learning is a theory that emphasizes learning through dialogue, reflection, and a willingness to examine one’s own biases and past experiences. It promotes belonging by creating space for students to be open, vulnerable, and truly heard. When students feel seen and valued in this way, a deeper sense of community and connection can flourish (Merriam & Baumgartner).
