Throughout the whole process of this summative and task, my partner and I always made it a point to discuss our ideas with each other before making a decision for the mind map. We would discuss ideas, weigh the pros and cons of each idea and try to understand what would be the best for our mind map. We try to work out the issue within our group, but sometimes we couldn’t choose between each other’s ideas. This is when we asked our peers and teachers for help. We would check with our friends to see what they think is the best idea for us to make. Then, we would ask our teach to see what is the most practical idea for the mind map. 

I wouldn’t say that we faced many issues within our team, but my partner and I did sometimes face some difficulties at times. The conflicts and mild arguments which we had were mainly about the final idea of the mind map. We would sometimes face difficulties about background colour, the style of the flowers or other small things as that. I think one of the main ways we solved our conflicts was that we would compromise. If I compromised one of my ideas, then we would compromise on another idea of my partner’s. We even decided to seek help from our peers and teachers when we were in doubt of which idea we should choose. However, we didn’t argue about much topics and tried mostly to work with all our ideas combined. 

Yes, I believe that we definitely did listen to each other’s ideas and perspectives when it came to our mind map. Throughout the whole process of making the formative and summative, we would tell each our ideas and think about how we could implement those. However, obviously we weren’t able to implement all those ideas. The method we used to check if we could implement an idea, was that we would first think if we could actually make such an idea possible. Then, we thought if it would look good or not. That’s what mattered a lot to us. In conclusion, we thought of all the possibilities and weighed the pros and cons of those ideas. 

What is the theme of your mind map? Have you succeeded to develop it in your visual presentation? 
The theme of our mind map was a combination of nature and watercolours. What I mean is that we planned to make a couple of flowers which would open sideways, and the information was written under the flowers. So, as the audience would open the flowers, they could read all our information. We made all of our final things out of water coloured papers. This included everything from the flowers, the stem and even the title’s watercolor blob. We wanted this to be one of the main themes of our mind map because we thought that it would definitely compliment the theme of nature and flowers. We believed that to put these two themes together, we would have to compliment it by creating a dark background, which is why we chose a black background paper. We are definitely extremely happy with the outcome, because we believe that the black paper compliments the watercolour and nature themes to a great extent. We also believe that we were able to highlight the two important themes of this mind map, by including only the most needed items on the mind map. This only included the plants, the stems and the arrows. The arrows were made of only thick white lines, in order to keep the focus on the flowers and not bring the attention on the arrows. Hence, I believe that we did succeed in developing our two main themes into our mind map.

Did you learn anything new in this process?
Yes, I did definitely learn a lot of things in the process of creating my visual presentation and mind map. One of the first things I learned in the process of making this mind map was all of the information on Illustrations. This included what exactly an illustration is, what picture books are, he types of illustrations, how an illustrator builds a character, what storyboarding is, he process of illustrations, and much more too. Not only that, but I have also learned a lot of other skills including watercolouring and calligraphy, as well as more. I intend on learning more throughout the rest of my units and submission processes. 

The cover page of my story book has a lot happening.

For example, the bucket with the name plates on the teacher's table demonstrates how everyone is very creative, however, Brian's (the invisible boy) is buried under everyone else, as well as is every simple and not extremely outgoing and creative. I think that this demonstrates the manner in which Brian is a very introverted student and doesn't like being as outgoing as all the students.

The fact that my cover page is all about Brian as a quiet and introverted student, and not completely invisible, I believe is showed in a very creative manner.

Another example is that Brian is peeping into the classroom, trying to fit in, however he is just not like the other children. Which is why, he isn't liked by the rest of the students for a long time. However, when a new students comes into the class, Brian is able to connect with Justin very quickly, since he is adaptive and helpful. 

Yes, personally, I do believe that the cover page for my chosen story book us very clear to the audience.

With this cover page, my audience would be able to tell that the story is about an introverted and quiet little boy. This story is very captivating, and teaches a very important moral to all children. Which is why, it is important that I find a manner to creatively explain to the children the importance of all morals and what they teach us in the future.

Honestly, I do believe that while creating my cover page illustrations, I kept my audience in mind. I kept thinking about how my cover page must be simple enough for children to understand, yet creative enough for them to enjoy looking at the cover page, both at the same time.

I do believe that my title is communicating the main idea. Firstly, I made sure to use black colour text on top of an already dark background. What I mean, is that I have put the title on top of the brick wall background. Because of this, the title is slightly merging into the brick walled background. In this story book, Brian isn't completely invisible, however, he is always very quiet and doesn't like talking to other students in his class much. This represents how Brian is merging in with everyone else, and not quite standing out.

However, this changes when a new character comes, Justin. Before Justin arrives, Brian would spend a lot of his free time, such as recess, or Choosing Time, alone. He enjoyed expressing himself through his art, rather than verbally. This was non-identical to the behaviour of other young toddlers and children, since they spoke a lot and had a lot of fun with their friends. My artwork showcases how Brian would spend his alone time drawing away on the ground, creating sculptures and imaginative creatures of his own. However, I wanted to show the concept of how Brian would imagine many creative things, but wasn’t able to successfully bring them to reality. This could be possible because of the fact that he was judging himself, since there was no one there to support him. Which is why, in the foreground, I have shown how Brian is imagining these amazing creations, but in the upper back ground, he is only able to draw as much as possible in his capacity.

Is your illustration and character style matching your cover page.

My illustrations aren’t completely matching my cover page since in the cover page, there was a completely different location, and in my illustration, there is a completely different setting as well. However, I can say that the idea behind both my cover page as well as my full page illustration is the same. The idea in short words is that Brian isn’t completely invisible, but is incredibly silent and isn’t able to portray his feelings emotions and opinions to others in any other form other than art. However, this changes when he gets a push from a new friend, Justin. 

When it comes to the character style, I think that my character in the full page illustration looks very similar to the one in my cover page. However, there wasn’t a need to make it identical, since in the full page illustration, my character is lying on the ground and is showing his back to the story book reader. This is why, you can’t quite tell if my character in the cover page is similar to the one in my full page illustration. While that is said, I have also tried to make my characters in these two illustrations as similar looking as possible. 

I think that one of the positive points of my full page illustration is the fact that I have made a creative full page illustration, which tells the deeper meaning of the story, and doesn’t just draw a part of the story book. What I mean is that by drawing the wonder bubbles, I have demonstrated Brian’s thinking processes as well. This is not a part of the story book, but is the deeper meaning as well as the moral of this story. 

One of the biggest negative points in my artwork is the fact that my work isn’t a 100% neat. It could in fact be much more neater and much more immaculate as well in my entire full page illustration. 

What are the elements of art and principles of arts are used in your work, could you explain it?

Texture → I think that I haven’t used a lot of texture in this illustration. This is because I have only used one medium, water colours. These give the paper a textured rough feeling once they dry, however are also very simple compared to other textures.

This is because in the small sectioned illustrations, all we can see are hands of the children, and this isn’t emphasised much in the cover page.

I think that one of the positive points of my small sectioned illustrations is the fact that I have made creative illustrations, which gives the reader a different and unique perspective of the children and actions taken by them. In similar words, from the book, I tried to create an illustration which lets the reader perceive it in whatever manner they wish. I wanted to keep the illustrations basic, but open to different perspectives.
