My Personal Vision for Teaching

I teach from integrity, and aim to instill peace.

I teach to meet students where they are, helping them access what is already within them.

I teach to support students in ways I wish I’d been (from love, belief, seeing the good).

I teach so that students leave my classes feelings more resourced, grounded, capable than before they arrived.

I hope to be a safe place to land in a world that can often be overwhelming and destabilizing.

One way I bring peace into my teaching is by having my students do a minute of mindfulness every day at the start of class. Another way is by taking slow deep breaths throughout the period to stay grounded, and remind myself to see my students through soft, loving eyes.

PEACE-JUSTICE-AUTONOMY

-Providing students with the tools they need to envision, create, and share work to express identities and visions for future lives.

-Help people establish ways of being that offer alternatives to the repressive and restrictive aspects of society.

-Students are motivated, independently driven, self-directed, and thinking deeply about their craft.

This week students are thinking about ways that they can document their artwork in such a way that leaves a temporal trace on its surrounding environment. Students are investigating ways that presenting their artwork can interact with broader society.

One way I bring joy and connection is by having them learn to play songs that they already enjoy. I aim to give them a fair amount of student choice with our projects so it feels relevant to them. Then they can connect with each other based on what they enjoy.

One way I bring justice into the classroom is by making connections between the past and today. When we learned about the Black Death we talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic exposed inequalities in our world.

I teach to make a difference in the world -

One student at a time.

I teach so that I can make knowledge and information come alive for my students through love, kindness, care, connection, & humor.

I teach so that I can see students learn and find their place in their families/homes, in their communities, and in the world.

I teach so that I can see my students have AHA! Moments; to see their eyes widen with revelation, surprise, wonderment, self-worth, and confidence, AND to know that they are loved and cared for.

One way I bring books alive for my students is by acting, moving around the room, inviting them into the scene. And one way I bring connection into my classroom, is by having conversations with my students, when I feel it is needed, even if it means sometimes abandoning my lesson plan for a period of time.
