While researching restorative justice, I found cases such as one in Norfolk, Va., where a youth stole his parents' car, crashed it into another woman's car, and ran. Instead of serving time in juvenile detention, a restorative justice program allowed him to work and pay the woman back for damage to her car and income she lost while her injuries prevented her from working. The youth and the victim met, and he was able to see the connection between his bad decisions and the harm he had caused".(Restorative Justice Is a Good Alternative to Incarceration.)

Some of the criticisms of restorative justice also relate to the way conditions aimed at fostering the participation of victims and offenders are set. Too often, the victim's and the offender's status have not been carefully assessed or their needs have not undergone a "comprehensive analysis. Time is not always spent providing them with information, preparing them psychologically or allowing them to familiarize themselves with the process and the objectives (Morris, . Some studies have shown that victims were pressured to take part in mediation or meeting circles"( The Limits of Restorative Justice.)

This quote is significant because it gives a specific example of when restorative justice was used and the good that came out of it. It shows how although there was initial loss both parties are able to heal and no one wins or lose. The offender heals and benefits because they do not have to go to jail, they can make up for their mistakes and they can apologize for their actions; and the victim benefits because the damaged is repaid and they are not losing anything. Also the offender is not labeled a criminal.

Restorative justice has not yet changed the basic course of the criminal justice system. It has proven to be a more effective alternative to prison or other forms of punishment, but has produced mitigated results in terms of victim participation and reparation for injury (Bonta, 1998, in Griffiths, 1999). Despite the high level of satisfaction among victims indicated by the research, particularly studies that focused on mediation, we have to be cautious still and refrain from overstating the benefits of restorative justice.

Students’ feelings of safety within
the school were measured on a
four-point scale and increased
significantly over the course of
the year (from 2.9 to 3.8).
