As a Chinese woman adopted into a white family as a baby, in a small town that was predominantly white, I had never really experienced being around people who looked like me. When I was in the 8th grade I got chosen to be a delegate for our city to go visit our sister city in Japan. As a 14 year old going to a country or even just being in a space where people looked like me (I know it was Japan and not China-but still the only experience I’d ever had being around so many people that looked like me with more similar cultures to my birth culture) was so transformative. It made me realize how much representation matters and that I wanted to be a BIPOC educator so that other BIPOC students could see people that looked like them in education.

Post covid, I was feeling very defeated as a teacher because I had some kids who were absent so often and there was no accountability. I felt like there was a lack of partnership with families and the same kids were absent or tardy on a daily basis. I am genuinely glad she is just here and I will never again ask a student why they are tardy if it's a continual issue. I will simply day "I'm so glad that you are here." My youngest son struggled in elementary and middle school to manage his ADHD, often making noises without realizing it. Some teachers corrected him in ways that put him on the defensive, so he had a hard time keeping his grades up. Then he met a choir teacher who saw a gift in him. With this outlet, he was able to manage his symptoms in class, and all of his other grades improved dramatically. He found himself, and I learned first-hand the power of knowing your giftedness. Growing up I knew I didn't want to have my own children, but wanted to be a mother. As I grew older I felt like nobody understood and I had a hard time conveying WHY to family and partners because it was just who I was and what I (didn't) envision for my life.

At 27 I lived in Nepal, living in a hostel for girls rescued from human trafficking and teaching at the local school. I met so many children who deserved and needed families. It reaffirmed my desire not to have my own children and showed me a path to motherhood I had considered but was unsure about.

I teach in a K-5 elementary school. There are 8 nonverbal students who are in our DLC program. I have been endeavoring to build a meaningful relationship with each student individually. Last week, one little girl grabbed my hand and kissed it two times. She did the same this week. She no longer cries when she is in my classroom. I feel like we now have a connection. I am very grateful. And I am motivated to make a difference in her world.

Traveling to Europe with 38 students for a week (international field trip) - first one offered at that school ever. For 90% of the students, it was the first time they had left the state, let alone the country. I did study abroad in college, and without a doubt I learned more doing that for a summer than all my years in school as a student combined. I wanted to provide the same opportunity to my students - because immersion is such an invaluable teacher, and I wanted to try to open up doorways for students.

For me, I was deeply transformed by observing the children in a Montessori elementary classroom. I was an assistant; I'd already read one of her books. What I saw the children do, how they responded to their own needs, the needs of the plants and pets/animals in the classroom, and each others needs (it was mixed age), I was blown away by how powerful and compassionate and effective these children could be when they were not bossed around and controlled all of the time. I realized that children and I were capable of incredible self-realization when we accept the invitation of freedom and responsiblity, if we are respected and supported and connected with learning opportunities that include oportunities to respond to our genuine interests.

So, two years later, I sought the training to become a Montessori. It has changed my life and roots me in many ways.

I was 16. I was in East Texas and was telling the kids in my classroom about Egypt's contributions to mathematics in Western Education. Also, African mathematics. My classmates teased and ridiculed me. My math teacher pulled all the information I was saying off of Google to get the students to learn. I yelled a profanity because I was so fed up. My teacher said, "Netera!" I instantly started crying and telling him I was sorry. He told me it wasn't my fault, this was the first time as a Black child I had an educator validate what I was saying. I felt seen. I'm not sure of I answered the question, this is just where my heart took me.
