These two videos comment on silence. From these videos, I got the overwhelming message that silence is dangerous. We never know what is going on in someone's life, because they do not tell us. They keep the sad, shameful, etc. under wraps because they do not want to look weak to others. When people struggle, they keep it a secret from everyone else around them. I have been through the same thing. I did not want people to worry about me and what I was going through. I was silent about my struggle, and eventually everything turned out okay for me. However, it does not always end up that way. Silence can lead to suicide. Silence is dangerous. Everyone should have at least one person they can open up to. I finally got better when I found that one person.

These two videos relate because the man in the video clip warns how people will sit around after the video and eat their dinner because it does not relate to them. The TED talk speaker warns how that if you do not speak up about an issue and are silent then worse things will happen like the Rwanda genocide. They both are saying silence is dangerous because of what it can do to the person of group of people who you are being silent to. Not speaking up about an issue is something too common in today's world and the TED talk speaker is trying to inspire people to speak up and be a change in the world.

The first video shown shows the power that silence has. Being silent instead of using our voices can have drastic effects, and it is not only important, but our duty, to use our voices. No matter what the subject is on, we are encouraged to speak our opinions. It doesn't matter if you're scared, nervous of what people will think of you, you need to stand up, because then that will cause a chain reaction of others who were too afraid to stand up. It's hard to

The two videos relate to each other because the TED talk relates to how if you are silent and don't say anything, it can lead to problems, such as the Rwandan genocide. The video clip shows a cinematographer who is documenting the genocide in Rwanda. He says that he is not sure if he wants to air the footage, because the people will see and say it is horrible, but continue to eat their dinner like nothing is happening. The speaker uses this point to illustrate that if you are silent and don't say anything, you are often being more hurtful then if you were to say something.

Both of these videos are related in the way that action has to be taken, and the first step is speaking up. In the first video, the one man says that even if people see that video, they will continue on with their lives because it does not directly affect them. Unfortunately, this is true in many cases. People are not motivated to do the right thing unless there are benefits for themselves. I like how the man on the Ted Talk said, "I will live every day as if there is a microphone tucked under my tongue." This is the way everyone should live. If there is someone I need to defend, or something that needs to be said, I would like to be able to speak up and say the right thing for the situation.

These two videos relate because the TED talk explains the fact that in order for someone to notice something is for them to listen and not stay silent. The TED talk speaker chose to stay silent to actually see and hear the events that are going on around him. The scene from the movie really emphasizes how even though the silence might be broken and the world finds out about these horrible atrocities, doesn't mean that people will do anything because it does not personally affect them. But they only way for situations to change or get better is if someone speaks up or speaks out.

The danger of silence is that people will always take advantage of empty space. Specifically the Rwandan genocide is an example of this. The instability caused by the Belgian colonization and subsequent decolonization caused a vacuum where hate could grow, resulting in a genocide over previous artificial classifications. Beyond that, when the atrocity was brought to the attention of the international community, the silence of the few led to the silence of the many. Once one leader stayed silence, the room on the subject went silent. Now, today, because nobody spoke out on the subject the genocide can still be denied.

Both videos relate because they mention silence. Silence is dangerous, even though some people believe that they are protecting themselves by remaining silent. Many think that remaining silent is the easy way. It is important to speak up and defend yourself in any type of situation so that people do not take advantage of you. Even if you think your opinions and ideas are incorrect or not important it is still better to voice your thoughts. People should stop being fearful about what others will think of them as a result of what they say.

"Silence is the residue of fear." Wow, I really like how Clint Smith personifies silence in such a manner. In society, danger is very real. Fear, however, is a choice. It is a product of your thoughts and what you allow those thoughts to within your body. Things are not always easy, but keeping your mouth shut and not saying anything can bring about more harm than good. As a result, those internal fears lead people into depression, episodes of rage, and sometimes even suicide. Talk to someone... So many people look past this important step of getting help.

These videos relate in a couple ways focusing around the issue of remaining silent. While some people think silence is a form of protection, it can often cause more harm than good. Words are so powerful and are capable of so much, that to not use them is simply foolish. These videos showcase the importance of using the voice we are given. In the case of the Rwandan Genocide and many other tragedies, all it takes is action. If people use words to come together, thousands of people all over the world suffering from atrocities could be saved from the terrible life they live.

Often people don't voice their thoughts because they feel their opinions are unimportant or unwanted. In the ted talk Smith advocates that we speak our mind more often, that we stand up for the things we believe in. The scene from Hotel Rwanda, however, defeats the significance of that initiative by explaining the futility of broadcasting atrocities to an unattached global audience.

I believe it is necessary to defend the principles that we believe in. I believe it is just as important though to listen carefully when others do the same.

These videos both have a similar main idea about using your voice to speak your opinion and then actually taking action to make something happen. The dangers of silence are widespread. They range from hurting others' feelings to having your feelings trapped. Without using a voice to speak one's opinions, no one will truly know how one feels. This can lead to misunderstandings and the loss of one's input. The second video was incredibly powerful due to the use of examples the speaker talked about. In those instances, silence acted as a barrier and hurt either the speaker or whoever he was talking to. It important to always say one's opinion and speak your mind.

When I first watched the film Hotel Rwanda, I was saddened by the events of the story, but mostly by the conversation that took place in the video I showed. My family, like many others in America, often watches the news around dinner time and just like in the video, we hear about something so terrible and outrageous, but we keep on with our regular routine. Then I heard Clint Smith's spoken word poem about how deadly silence can be, and I truly embraced his message about speaking up. Sometimes we're told it is better not to argue with others, and to just be quiet. This is such a lie that is pushed on society. The most important thing a person can contribute to the human race is their thoughts and ideas. It makes to sense to stay quiet, when you have the power to help others just by speaking up.

Using one's voice can help speak one's truth but can also aid in telling others' truths too. Unfortunately, in the world we live in today, many have become silent, whether through fear or insensitivity. It is often uncomfortable and terrifying to speak up; it is simply easier to remain silent. Thanks for sharing these two great clips, Claire!
