Malka Zimetbaum was born in a family of five and was the very first child. She was born in Brzesko, Poland on January 26, 1918. She excelled in mathematics and languages like Flemish, French, German, Polish, and English. Malka had joined a Jewish youth organisation and changed her name to Mala.

After two years traveled by with the German occupation of Belgium, Mala was caught at the Antwerp Central Station on July 22,1942. Mala was looking for a hiding place somewhere with her family and herself, but on that day she was arrested. The Germans took Mala to Fort Breendonk and five days later she was sent to Mechelen. In Mechelen, German authorities had created a collection and deportation point for Jews from the Dossin Barracks.

Through her journey, Mala was placed in the normal section at JudenRampe outside Birkenau. She was one of the 101 females that were built for labour while 717 of the females were gassed immediately. When she was subjected to her woman camp, number 19880 was tattooed on her forearm. In a wooden barrack that was originally supposed to be a horse stable, Mala with her skills of languages, she was a Lauferin, who was a messenger and interpreter.
