Some of them are and some of then are not, but for the most part they are harmful.
The motive itself might not hurt anyone but the things they need to do to reach their goal was. 
wanting more land isn't a bad thing, except when you invade an area, kill or enslave the people there and steal their land.
It is the same thing with spreading religion, it isn't a bad thing to want people the share the same beliefs as you, except when you force it on them.

No, he did not.
The spirit of exploration and the acquisition of knowledge isn't just traveling somewhere and staying there for a little bit. It is meeting the people learning about the culture,  sharing your own culture.
If you just force your culture and beliefs onto someone it isn't sharing knowledge. They were a little different but still very similar.
One of the largest differences is that the English did not start killing right away, they also were not worshiped as gods. A lot of the things the English did the Spanish did as well. As we say in sources 1 and 5 they are bringing Christianity and trying to spread their religion,and in source 2 they state that they will conquer everyone who isn't christian.

The Europeans did discover lots of new land and people their goal was usually to invade it and rob the people. When the sailors set out from Europe their goal was one of the 3 G's most of the time.
If their goal was gold and they found people with lots of gold and riches they would rob those people ad take the land so they could find more latter,
If their goal was glory then they would conquer the natives so they could go home and bag about what they did.
If their goal was God then they would spread their religion and convert everyone they could, by force if necessary.
