General Washington

General George Washington played a major part in the American Revolution. Born in 1732 on his father’s plantation in Virginia, he was raised in Colonial Virginia by his prosperous planter of a father. At a young age, his father died and left the plantation to Washington and his brother. During this time, he learned the importance of hard work. Later, because of his gift for mathematics, he became a surveyor. Through his experiences, he gained knowledge and strength to later become a wise and cunning leader.

During the French and Indian War, he started out as a message-boy and later became a commander. After joining Marth Custis in marriage, he became the commander of the Continental Army. He lead a once unprepared and unruly group of men to win freedom and justice from England. To do so, he crossed the Delaware, attacked Trenton, and planned the Battle of Yorktown. Later, he became the first president of the United States of America.

1) "... supplies you brought me came from heaven." Jemima was very grateful for the supplies Canoe had brought her.
2) " He was indeed my father's brother." This was an important part of the book because Jemima realized Canoe was her uncle.
3) " Who wants a man without pride?" Canoe was basically saying, who wants a man without a personality?
4) "... doing what you think is right doesn't always make you feel good." Jemima learned that she can't be so naive and always do what she wants to do.
5) " There is time enough for drums." Jemima's dad's last words from his speech on her birthday meant that there is time to think about other things than just the war.
6) " The war has its price, Jemima, and we feel it more and more each day." War has an immense impact on people and sometimes we don't feel or realize it.
7) " They believed that the laws of nature and God justified them..." The Americans believed that these beliefs justified their actions.
8) Otter Hall, a place the towns people used for shelter and a place to store items.
9) " Doesn't your mama mind when you go out like that?" After Jem's father died, her mother was very distant and didn't even remember her own daughter.
10) " I'm Daniel, Jem." Daniel, Jemima's brother just got home and Jemima couldn't recognize her own brother.

To Whom It May Concern,

It is my pleasure to recommend Jemima Emerson for admission in to your law program. As not only her guidance counselor but also a friend, I have got to see firsthand her commitment and hard work that she puts into her studies. She has a wide variety of hobbies including knitting and volleyball as well as frequently volunteering at many shelters for the needy. Jemima’s main focus, however, is her studies. She has an ability to always keep her grades at an outstanding, ninety percent or higher and excels in the debates that she participates in in and out of class.

Despite the resent murder of her father, she continues to maintain her high scores in advanced and AP classes and the focus needed to achieve her goals. She never turns in an assignment late and always strives to have the highest grades in her class. Her dedication is shown by her excellent grades and participation in multiple after-school activities. Jemima’s strong-willed and bubbly personality gives her a sense of independence and confidence needed for the line of work she is interested in.

Jemima has already advanced in her future by applying for multiple scholarships and receiving many. She has also spent lots of time working to improve her PSAT and SAT scores. To prepare for and move forward in her career journey, she is taking 2 college classes and has already completed 3 semester’s worth of classes. Altogether, Jemima Emerson is a trustworthy candidate and has a bright future ahead of her.

Respectfully submitted, Kristin Tubb, Trenton High School Counselor
