A person who is well known in society who has done something with their lives which was unexpected was Demi Lovato. She ended up being a drug addict which was unexpected. I think she felt like she let all of her fans down. There were also some haters who made fun of her. Her fans supported her and brought her up. This experience from her shows that people don’t know the real person we really are, only we do.

My parents don’t care what I do for life, as long as I have a job and I’m happy. I can see where parents are coming from by putting pressure on their kids because they might want their kids to have a better life then they had. I still think it is wrong by doing so because kids can be stressed out and feel a lot of pressure from their parents. Parents should tell their kids to follow their dreams because that will make them happy. Working a career that you were forced to work at won’t be fun.

In the epigraph of Rocket Boys, there are two quotes that come from Dr. Wernher von Braun and Miss Freida Joy Riley. The first quote comes from Dr. Wernher. He talks about children remember everything that happens. Wernher stresses the importance of education, and how we can introduce it to them at a young age for them to grow to do big things. I think he is also stressing that education is forever and can lead to a great life. I think this quote can relate to the future of this book because Homer can seem to love education which leads him to a good job at NASA.

The next quote in the epigraph comes from Miss Freida. In this quote, she is also saying that education is important. She says it is ourselves that can decide if we want to learn. She brings up that she can give us a book and it would be our decision to learn and read it. I think this would be related to Rocket Boys because Homer could learn a lot of information because he loves to learn. Both Wernher and Freida stress the importance of knowledge and how it goes on forever.

In Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam Jr, Sonny realizes that his Mom gives him support while his Dad doesn’t, but loves his other son Jim. One day, in his Mom’s garden, Sonny decides to build a rocket. Once the rocket launched, it completely destroyed the fence, and his Mother was filled with rage at first. When Homer finds out, he is filled with rage. He focuses on him being embarassed by his son’s actions. Homer told Elsie that “[I] don’t care about any other boys, just take care of this one before he embarasses me all over Coalwood” (Hickam Jr. 40-41). Homer bringing up that he doesn’t want to be embarassed by Sonny shows that he can brag about Jim’s accomplishments. Jim is a football star for his high school which Homer can brag about. A couple days later, Sonny continues to build rockets with Quentin. One rocket they tested hit Homer’s office, and he was extremely furious. Mr. Bykovski supplied Sonny with resources for the rocket, so Homer went to talk to him and seemed very mad. Sonny felt guilty because Elsie was telling him that he took advantage of Mr. Bykovski because he has to work in the coal mines now as a punishmemt. Once Mr. Bykovski told him what happened, Sonny screamed out, “My dad’s the meanest man in this town!” (Hickam Jr. 97). Both times that Homer was angry at Sonny shows that he isn’t proud of what his son is doing. In conclusion, Sonny knows that what he is doing isn’t backed up by his father.
