I started junior high school in seventh grade. It was a big school compared to my elementary, and I was nervous. In first period, my English teached called role, and when she got to me she said, "Anna Post." I raised my hand and said, "Here, but call me Susie." A few minutes later she called out, "Anna Warren." A girl raised her hand and said, "Here, but call me Susie." We looked at each other surprised. We kind of looked alike; we were both short. And we were both named Anna Susan, but called Susie. We became best friends from that moment through high school! We were known as Susie & Susie.

Fun fact: After working all over the world and living in many different states, Susie lives a mile from me here in Durham, and we see each other frequently!

My first name, Libby, is actually my nickname. My real name is Libertad, which is Spanish for Liberty. I was named Libertad because I was born on Mexican Independence Day (not Cinco De Mayo, it's actually September 16th). Both my parents were born in Mexico, so naming me Libertad made sense to them. I love the name and the meaning behind it. But, growing up a lot of people had trouble with pronouncing it - that's why I now go by Libby. It also saves me a lot of time when ordering food :)

My parents are from China. They had my Chinese name figured out, but didn't care much about my English name. They saw Nicole Kidman everywhere (like on billboards) and thought it would be a nice name. For reference, Nicole Kidman is the person in the AMC video before every movie at AMC. They also chose it because it was a name that people would not make fun of me for, so while it is a common name, that was the point. My sister was then named Sharon, after Sharon Stone, so we are both named after actresses.

My name is Liew Xiao Theng, Xiao Theng is my given name and Liew is my surname (for context, I'm ethnically Chinese so I've a Chinese name). My family usually calls me Xiao Theng while my friends call me XT.

XT is a nickname I choose for myself when I attended national high school as my school had a high proportion of non-ethnic Chinese and my Chinese name is hard for people to pronounce correctly. Another reason I choose this nickname instead of a English name is that I feel more at ease with it while choosing a English name makes me feel weird.

While people have told me that I shouldn't simplify my name for the convenience of other people, I've use this name long enough that I'm very at ease with it. Besides, I think that the name is also a great representation of my personality.

I mentioned in class last week that I have six siblings, but I didn't mention that each of our names have Arabic translations. My first and middle name roughly translate to "Everblooming Rose." My parents had decided on my name before I was born, which was inspired by my grandmother Rosetta, who passed away before I was able to meet her. Coincidentally, as a young child, my family noticed that I had inherited my grandmother's mild rosacea. With my name already translating to "rose" and the bright red cheeks to match, my oldest brother started calling me Rosie. To this day, my family still uses that nickname more frequently than my real name.

I was named after my great-grandmother Elsie. Funny enough though when I was looking into my family's history I couldn't find my great-grandmother anywhere online. It turned out that Elsie wasn't her real name and that was only her nickname. Her real name was Elsa. But she so commonly went by Elsie that not even my mother knew Elsa was her real name. I still love the name even though it wasn't my great-grandmother's real name. Also, people can call me E for a nickname.

Whenever I ask my parents why they picked the name 'Eva' for me, they say it just came to them; and, when I asked if they had an alternative for a boy (knowledge about the child's sex is illegal in India), they would sya they had none. According to my mom, Eva means 'a breath of fresh air' (although google says nothing of that sort). Since it's quite an atypical name in India, many people thought I was German on first encounter. So, it always struck me as incredibly unique and spontaneous-- the fact that no one around me had heard of this name, and the fact that my Indian parents just 'knew' I would be Eva.

My name is Lingyi Shen. Interestingly, my mom actually got me the name using the name generator. Like you put your birthday, zodiac signs, birth time and everything into the generator, and you'll get a name. She told me like this name is top one in the system. But if you have to ask whether each character has their own meanings, I guess Ling灵 means intelligent and yi羿 means Soar--->success. But one bad consequence of having my name is that Lingyi in Chinese sounds like supernatural (different character but same pronunciation). Still, my friends made great nickname out of it, guigui鬼鬼like ghosty :)

Originally, they planned on naming me Millicent but after further consideration they realised it was too similar to Maleficent.
