Create an exciting "break" in your child's homework...by announcing a "commercial interruption", followed by a really engaging, lively read of a first page of a new book from your shelf...stop once you've captivated your audience, "returning to the regularly scheduled broadcast". Your child will be hooked!

Chained to Books!

Challenge your child to add a paper chain link each time he or she finishes a book...reward with a special treat for reaching a certain destination in your home (stretch it to the kitchen, to your bedroom, etc.) or length (as tall as she or he is!)

Create a magical space in your home that is special just for reading- and institute a regular time where you are all reading...this could be a special bean bag, a fort, a nook under the stairs, an indoor swing or hammock...when our children see us read, they follow.

And...how nice would it be just to "fall into a book" in a spot like this?

Create a "book club" with your child- it could be you, a cousin, a grandparent...make sure everyone has a copy, and have nightly "check-in" book club discussions, in person, on the phone, on a Zoom meet... sharing the favorite part, picture, word, predictions, or simply presenting a read aloud by each member. You could even have each member suggest a special snack that would fit the theme of the book or section you have read...Stuffed animals welcome.

We all had favorite read alouds as children...revisit one from your childhood that you remember or select a new title, and make time before bed every night to snuggle up and find out what happens next. Even in 4th and 5th grade...we're never too old to listen to an awesome read!
