It is an international legal document aimed at combating global warming due to emissions of greenhouse gases. This are gases that contribute to the retention of gases in the atmosphere.
The treaty was signed in the city of Kyoto in December 1997 by more than 160 countries.
It commits the signatories to reduce total emissions of pollutants by at least 5% in the period 2008-2012 compared to 1990 levels.
In order for it to enter into force, were required no fewer than 55 signatory nations who had produced at least 55% of pollutant emissions. 
It came into force in February 2005.
Several industrialized countries did not want to sign it, such as the United States and Australia.

In the period 1990-2007, the commission recorded:
  • 7% reduction in emissions in the energy sector;
  • 11% for industrial processes and agriculture;
  • 39% for the waste sector.

In the transport sector, on the other hand, there was an increase of 24%.
