Implicit Bias

Asian American ('Asian - European American' IAT).

I had an implicit bias going into the IAT because I am an Asian American. I also do not consider Asian Americans or European Americans as more foreign than the other group. The first few instances it was tough to identify if a woman was either European American or Asian American. I had to think a few more seconds before choosing the correct category for her. I did not know if the currency was associated with Foreign or Asian American. I was surprised that I had a stronger automatic association with European American with American and Asian American with foreign at 23% versus 2% strong association of Asian American with American and European American with foreign. Going into the IAT, I believed I would associate both European American and Asian American closer in scale with American. The results indicated the inverse in showing that I believed Asian Americans are more foreign. My implicit bias was significant in a total of 47% strong and moderate automatic association of European American with American and Asian American with foreign.

Fat and Thin

I found it challenging to associate the fat and bad words or fat and good words with the thin and bad words or thin and good words. It was not automatic for me to choose which words belonged to either fat or thin. I was not surprised by my results with a 31% strong automatic preference of thin people compared to fat people. Also I scored a 28% moderate automatic preference of thin people compared to fat people. On the opposite end, I only scored a 1% of a strong automatic preference of fat people compared to thin people. I was not surprised by my results and there was nothing significant about my experience.
