What do each character's external desires and internal conflicts say about their definition of the "American Dream"? Are they similar or different? How do they compare to the stereotypical white "American Dream"?

Beneatha's ideas of American dream is externally getting a good job, and an education. But internally being able to fight for and do what your believe in. I think this is the same American dream as most white people though for her there are more barriers to cross to achieve that dream.

Ruth has a somewhat classic idea of the American Dream. She wants the type of upward mobility and freedom that has characterized the American Dream for so many people throughout history. Her somewhat internal conflict about Walter being both a better husband and just happy in general is one thing that is unique about her interpretation. I think that this dream is actually pretty similar to a stereotypical white American Dream, except I think Ruth and the rest of the Youngers have had to overcome much more due to their race.

Beneatha's main external conflict is her goal of becoming a doctor which is a pretty traditional idea of the "American Dream." Internally she is concerned with finding her identity, which isn't as much of a traditional idea of what the "American Dream" should be, as a lot of times the "American Dream" is portrayed as assimilating with white people and giving up your own culture.

While the classic American dream is to make money and have a good comfortable life that will then provide for your kids in the future, Ruth's idea seems to be a little more based in economic stability. She seems to be a little more realistic about what she can achieve in her current situation and with the people she needs to take care of. We can see this through her hesitation to follow Walter's plan which has a more lucrative possibility than using the money for a good house.

Walter's definition of the American Dream definitely is centered around money as power. We've seen in his talks with Mama and Travis that Walter believes money has always been the root of freedom, and also that money will unequivocally improve and their lives. His definition of the American Dream is pretty similar to that of the stereotypical one except that he faces more challenges than his white counterparts in achieving his dream.

Her version of the American Dream is to be able to utilize the opportunities granted by education to work as a doctor, a field that she is passionate about, without giving up her search for identity.

Walter defines the American dream as financial success and respect. I think this is why he's so insistent that Mama invest the life insurance money, because that's how all the young successful white men go about making money. I also think that this view of the American Dream involving respect is what causes him to lash out against his family. In his mind, he's supposed to be the head of the house, respected by all the women in his family, but he doesn't see this as the case.
