When I imagine becoming a mother, I imagine more than the moment of birth. I imagine the months after: the healing, the fear, the exhaustion, the quiet moments where everything feels fragile and new. That’s why I support extending postpartum Medicaid coverage.

Becoming a parent doesn’t end at 60 days. Love doesn’t end at 60 days. Recovery doesn’t end at 60 days. Yet, for so many people in Wisconsin, health care does.

As a future mom, it’s terrifying to think that during one of the most vulnerable seasons of life, when your body is still recovering, your hormones are shifting, and your mental health can be hanging by a thread, you could lose access to care simply because the calendar says time is up. No one should have to choose between ignoring warning signs and going into debt just to stay alive for their child.

Extending postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months is about giving parents the chance to heal, to ask for help, to show up fully for their children. Under SB23, Wisconsin women would have that chance.

I support this bill not just for today’s parents, but for my future self and for the kind of Wisconsin I want to raise my children in. One where we don’t abandon people after birth. One where we value life not just at the beginning, but through recovery, care, and compassion.

Postpartum care saves lives. As a future mom, I believe every parent deserves that chance.

It is unconscionable that our state is one of two that doesn't expand Badgercare for a full year postpartum. Complications frequently happen up to a year, moms are dying, suffering unnecessarily instead of going to the dr, it costs taxpayers MORE if they have to go to the ER as uninsured since they wait until it is an emergency instead (and far more expensive) then going to the dr immediately when something is going wrong. Have a heart, Speaker Vos, let the representatives vote on AB97, so the Governor can sign it. Pro-life and pro-choice advocates have come together on this issue. Reps, have a heart and backbone and press Speaker Vos into allowing you to VOTE as your constituents are asking you to do.

In Wisconsin, giving birth is far more dangerous for Black women and birthing parents, who face extreme racial disparities in maternal and infant health driven by systemic racism in health care. Black women in Wisconsin are five times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes and experience higher rates of severe complications compared to white women because of unequal treatment, bias, and barriers to care throughout pregnancy and postpartum. At the same time, Black women are far more likely to rely on Medicaid for maternity care, meaning gaps in coverage hit Black families hardest.

When postpartum care ends after just 60 days, it deepens racial inequities and puts lives at risk. Addressing postpartum Medicaid expansion is not only a health care issue, it is a racial justice issue that requires confronting racism in Wisconsin’s birth and health care systems.

I’m writing as a Wisconsin resident because I’m deeply concerned—and honestly frustrated—that postpartum health coverage can end at 60 days. That timeline ignores reality. Postpartum medical needs often last far longer: mental health support, follow-up care, blood pressure monitoring, lactation support, and complications that can appear months later.

Other states are extending postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months because it protects mothers and babies and helps prevent avoidable medical crises. Wisconsin families shouldn’t be left behind.

Please support the 12-month postpartum extension and help move it forward—whether that means co-sponsoring, publicly advocating, pushing leadership to schedule a vote, or supporting it through the budget process.

Speaker Vos, I know you’ve NEVER BIRTHED A BABY nor SUFFERED POSTPARTUM SENSATIONS! However, those of us who have had this trying experience, would have appreciated ANY AID!! I was lucky enough to have MY MOTHER, who coached & supported me!! What about those who have no elders to guide them??? They ARE NOT DISPOSABLE!! They need & deserve support; the MEDICARE ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE MUST BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THESE PRECIOUS CITIZENS OF WISCONSIN!! Have you read the news lately??WI & all the US are in need of more youngsters!! Without them, there will be NO ONE to care for us as we age; not enough workers to maintain our work force!!

It’s sad to have to be only one of two states that doesn’t care for mothers postpartum thru Medicaid. Mothers who need this are mothers who have struggled with poverty and other issues that led them to here. They more than ever need good care they can afford. Our morals guide us to take care of children and mothers. Support this bill to expand our postpartum care like 48 other states have today. It is the moral
