Why: It is important because it will level the playing field so all students will have the supports they need to accomplish the same goals. Each student would have an individualized education to support their learning so that all students will accomplish the same tasks.

Equality vs. Equity: Equality is giving all students the same materials and having them all have the same goal. Equity would be to have all students have the same goals but give each student the materials they need to accomplish the goals based on their individual starting points.

I'll start with the second part first. The difference between equality and equity is this: equality is all receive the same; equity is all receive what they need to attain the same outcome.
Educational equity is important because it means meeting our students where they are and providing them with the learning/supports they individually need. For example, Student A has no need for additional supports to meet mastery. This student would receive additional opportunities to expand his/her learning. Student B has significant needs and would receive the requisite supports to attain the same outcome (meeting standard).

Educational equity is important because students should all have the resources and supports they need in order to learn. This means that what one student needs may be different from what another student needs. Therefore, what is equitable is not always equal.

The difference between equality and equity is...equality is delivering curriculum to students and expecting them all to "get it/master it" at the same time and then moving on to the next unit of study. Equity is delivering curriculum to students and allowing for them all to "get it/master it" at their own pace before moving on to the next unit of study.

Equality assures that students have access to a quality education while equity helps to assure that our students receive the supports they need to learn.

-Equity is important because it assures that our students are getting what it is they need. It implies that we are tailoring their learning to address their needs. In contrast, equality simply provides all of our students with a one size fits all model which does not provide students with an educational experience that is personalized.

Equity is important because it is tailored to each individual student and students can only achieve college, career, and citizenship readiness if we target their specific learning needs throughout their education in NPS. Equality ensures that all are given fair and consistent practices and opportunities. Equity personalizes learning and targets the specific learning needs, opportunities, and gaps of students. Equity also ensures we address students who are above a standards and they we address their needs to advance their learning as well.

Equity refers to the same ends but different means, while equality refers to the same means to the same ends. In public education, we say that all learners should have access to the same goals, but we know that each learner may arrive at the same goal in differently. So equity refers to the opportunity for all students to achieve the same, high rigorous goals in a manner and pace that meets their needs. That is why educational equity is important.
