In this story, the idea jar is where students keep their ideas which vary but can be combined to make new and exciting stories. I chose this book as a mentor text for a writers workshop to help students with ideas and idea development. I would like for my students to learn from this book that ideas are not limited, they can be combined or changed and don't have a specific criteria for what makes an idea "good". I would like to create an idea jar for my classroom one day to help students come up with imaginative, adventurous, and creative writing pieces.

This is another story that I would use as a mentor text for a writers workshop. A young boy wants to write a story like his sister, but doesn't know how to write words. He was encouraged by his sister to start with what he knows- a letter. I think this book will relate a lot to my pre-emergent writers in 1st grade and Kindergarten. This book promotes the idea that stories are available for everyone to tell, and that everyone starts somewhere. Many of my Kindergarten and 1st grade students that I have worked with sometimes discourage themselves during writing by saying "I don't know how to write" or "I can't do it as good as you". I would read this book to a pre-emergent writer, who especially might be struggling with writing confidence, and hope that this will give them the boost to write what they can.

This book is a funny read about how even monsters need to eat their vegetables, and might inspire other “monsters” to eat or try some peas. In this story, it is a haiku based story which the setting is in Japan and explores the life of Issa. It is a great mentor text for different types of poetry, and it explores the sensitivity to feeling and experience that helps to create the art of poetry. I would love to use this story as a mentor text in 2nd grade when introducing different types of poetry. Also, haikus are typically easier for younger writers to develop because they should have the concept or knowledge of syllables. The underlying message of the story is sweet as well, which is that despite mistreatment and adversity, you can persevere with a caring and uplifted spirit.

I chose this book as a mentor text for ideas. This book is about a child who has an idea, loves this idea, but begins to become unsure of this idea because of what others are saying. I would use this story as a mentor text for personal narrative writing. This story is about a little girl and her father who go owling, but must remain pretty quiet in order to do so. They call out for the owls but there is no answer back. This story explores and shows the relationship between the father and daughter, as well as the relationship to nature. I would use this story as a mentor text for personal narrative writing. This story goes through to describe what nighttime is like in the country. It is very descriptive and talks about how when people sleep and dream of things during the day, the nighttime world awakens. I chose this mentor text for poetry because the language used in the story is very beautiful. I think this book hits many emotions with the usage of language and meaning, where it talks about finding the courage to connect even when feeling alone or isolated from others. I would use this in a classroom by reading it aloud, then dissecting each page to depict meaning with the class as a whole. For example, asking questions like: "What does this mean? In this book, students will be able to reflect on and analyze both the bears and Goldilocks perspectives throughout the story. Goldilocks assumed no one was home, so she helped herself to eat some food, lounge on their couch, and take a nice nap on their bed. When the bears come home, they were not too happy that she had done these things. Reflecting with students about the different characters points of view is important, especially when they're writing their own stories.

In this book, Duncan's crayons wrote him letters about quitting coloring for different reasons. Each colored crayon had a different point of view or perspective on why they wanted to quit being his crayons and they explain this each in their own letters. Using this book in the classroom as a mentor text, students will be able to identify the reasoning behind why different crayons quit, and potentially how Duncan could do something to make things right.

In this story, there is a character Merl who is a cat that is spoiled and pampered. One day, a puppy joins the families household. The puppy completely changes the atmosphere and life of Merl, until Merl tries his best to oust this new member of the household. Through this story, students are able to see that not only can perspective be taken from human characters, but also animals in stories. Students will be able to compare how the puppy feels and why, and how the cat feels and why as the story unfolds.

As the story moves from one voice to another, the characters perspectives are reflected in the shifting landscapes and reasons. This is a great mentor text for point of view as the story is literally retold through different voices and points of view- so there is no interpretation, it is simply told to the students.
