Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma starts in the cells of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system. The immune system is the body's defence against infections, and it goes throughout the body. Because it goes all through the body, NHL can be found almost anywhere, spread to almost anywhere. In the lymphatic system are lymph nodes, which is usually found as the starting spot of this cancer.

What are the causes, symptoms and signs of NHL?

Some of the causes of NHL include age, gender, chemicals, exposure to radiation and body weight/diet. NHL is most commonly found in people over the age of 60 and in males. The chemicals that could induce NHL include benzene, herbicides, and insecticides. The common symptoms and signs of this cancer include swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpit or groin, a rash or itchy skin on chest, stomach or back, unexplained fatigue, an unexplained fever over 38 degrees that does not disappear, night sweats that soak bedding or clothes, and unexplained weightloss of over 10% of body weight over 6 months.

How often does NHL occur in males? Females? Is it age related?

For the most part NHL is more commonly found in males, however there is 30 different types of NHL, so some of the types are more found in women. It has not yet been confirmed what types are more common in what gender or why. Again it has not been identified why, but most cases occur in people over the age of 60, however some types are found in younger people.

Can your diet, lifestyle or environment cause or prevent this cancer and how?

More research needs to be conducted to prove this theory, but it is believed that being overweight and having a diet high in fats and meats could increase the odds of getting NHL. It has not been tested or researched enough for scientists to know the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and NHL. Along with your diet and lifestyle, your environment can contribute as well. If you are exposed to radiation or chemicals such as insecticides or benzene throughout your life, your chance of getting NHL could increase. To help keep the risk low, try to maintain a healthy diet and limit exposure to radiation and harmful chemicals.

What tests are used and what are 3 ways NHL can be treated?

Some tests used include a physical exam done by your doctor, a blood and urine test, imaging tests, lymph node test, a bone marrow test and others depending on the stage or type. NHL can be treated by surgery, mostly used to remove parts of or all of the lymph node, to remove the spleen, which is called a splenectomy, or it can be to remove a tumour that has not yet disturbed any other organs or tissues, which is usually called a benign tumour. A stem cell transplant, which is generally used when there's a good chance of NHL coming back, when a person is beginning to show signs of recovery, or if someone no longer responds to treatments. Radiation therapy is also commonly used as a main treatment for NHL in early stages, that has not yet spread, used to prevent this cancer from spreading, preparation for a stem cell transplant, or to help shrink large tumours and relieve pain.
