It is our professional responsibility as educators to teach our students how to use the internet. We much teach them what them to be able to recognize credible and not creditable sites. This is so important because our students need to be life long learners and the internet can be a strong instrument in learning if we can determine if the information is credible.

This is a much need topic to cover at the elementary and secondary level. Vetting websites and different information you receive from the internet has become more important then every in today’s world of fake news. We as educators should create lessons that exercise students’ evaluation skills that will help them become better web consumers and researchers.

T Clark
General Music teacher

I agree with the article, and I appreciate the specific guidelines it provides to help, but not necessarily guaratee, ensure receiving accurate and reliable information. The scholarly search engines are a must to encourage with students, as opposed to merely googling or looking something up on Wikipedia. Cross-checking facts with a variety of sources is also emphasized.

As scholarly practitioners, we are responsible for ensuring students understand what makes a quality website. Students amaze me. Every day I see children do things they never knew they could do. I see wonderful, loving teachers empowering and encouraging kids to find their voice, their true passions. With all the social media sites, we must have a positive influence on students and incorporate real life skills in our curriculum to make it meaningful and engaging to students. I see what children are exposed to today, and it amazes me how resilient and remarkable they truly are! Understand peer reviewed websites and their purpose will support and guide students to thinking about what it is they need and the best websites that support academic work.

We, as educators, need to see that these are skills that our students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I agree that teachers need to incorporate lessons that include teaching students to evaluate websites for their use and this can be done while incorporating other aspects of classroom learning in their research.
A.
This article gives basic guidelines and cues of what to look for in a quality online source. Using books and library databases as your first line of research and is usually typical for traditional classroom teachers however, the Web is different. Being that online users are getting younger and younger, explicit tips of determining quality and credible sites include examining and determining if you are looking at a home page through the domain name or a blog. Does the "About Us" link reveal an individual person, author or sponsor. Determining they type of site and if the information is current. Overall good article

Students are taught to doubt the information they read unless they can identify it as a credible source, and then only if they find it on more than one credible site. Unless you are dealing with a primary source, all other sources carry an element of bias in them. I have told my students Wikipedia is an okay source to start with, but what they want to look at are the citations at the end of the Wiki articles. They also use educational databases and primary sources as much as possible.

Shelly Battista
