Define and evaluate the concept of wasteful authority (Ratliff, Ch. 11) as an important musical element across all kinds of music.

Ratliff portrays the musical element of "Wasteful Authority" as two distinctive voices, external and internal. External voice shows the action the individual is trying to make, and its outward affect on the publics outside of himself. On the contrary, internal voice conveys a personal ethos in which the artist is communicating to him/her being, and defining the message of the score internally. Moreover, Ben Ratliff affirms that if one is able to find an equilibrium between the two voices you will have what he calls, "Full Authority" over your audience and subsequent genre of the music. This creates a space for the artist to construct their own niche in music that they can share with their unique audience. Further, Ratliff describes how if you put more emphasis on one voice over the other creating imbalance so does your authority over your music, leading to failure within the music industry.

Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element? Why or why not?

For the most part I do agree with Ratliff's arguments regarding this musical element of Wasteful Authority. I agree with his view that one must find the true balance between both their internal and external voices, in order to find success in finding full authority in the content that they provide to the world. I affirm the statements about connecting to your inner self just a much as you outward self, however I do not find it to be an all around 24/7 thing. I find that my success is found when I focus on one area of voice over the other to master both, so that when I use both voices cohesively I can provide myself with a higher since of balance and authority over my music in a higher since. I do not agree that success is defined by the formula that Ratliff is portraying in his arguments. I believe that in todays society the virtuoso comes with a team that helps achieve good affects for all sides of the artist, rather than the artist being forces to show actions toward them on their own.

Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

One example that affirms Ratliff's arguments towards "Wasteful Authority" would be "God Save The Queen" by the Sex Pistols. I found it to be quite amusing as I listened to the track because is shows a satiric balance of internal and external voice. The artist is showing a satiric external voice that exemplifies the current state of event of his nation with its corruption and the need for attention from its people, as he went on about "having no future for me..." he was also showing his internal voice to himself. The balance here is between an internal voice that showing his concern for his nation and the current state of the government. He goes as far as stating the Queen isn't human. While, his external voice shows that his government should listen to their people, the artist as a result, showing his political stance to his audience, possibly in an attempt to influence.

Find at least one musical example outside of Ratliff’s playlist and justify its inclusion – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

An example outside of Ratliff's playlist that justifies inclusion would be "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai. I chose this song because much like the previous example the artist is finding balance between both his internal and external voices as he becomes one with full authority in his craft. The balance between the message in the primary example of his mastery of giving off his internal ethos but also an ethos that will affect the masses.
