“[Poetry] is the height and quintessence of emotion, of every sort of emotion. But it is always someone feeling something at white heat, and it is as vital as the description of a battle would be, told by a soldier who had been in it.”

Music provides exactly what Lowell describes. It is much like a long form of poetry expressed with a rhythm. It has the power to make you feel any type of emotion that the writer wants. Sometimes it is one solid emotion and sometimes it is a roller coaster of a few. Happiness, acceptance, sorrow, admiration etc.

To me this poem sounds like the loss of a loved one. Although they may not be with you, you still carry them in your heart. They are still a a part of everything you do. The expression of these emotions is vital. Acknowledgement of these feelings is key in moving forward.

High school training ground is written about how the Chicago streets are like a high school. They make concrete comparisons of the struggles that are faced daily. It shows the ever lasting oppression and danger experienced by those who live there. You can feel the anger and purpose in every word of this poem. The writer makes it feel quite literally like a battle.

Roethke did a great job of including subtle cues and undertones in this poem. They conflict the more obvious knee- jerk emotions the poem brings about. Reading it there is initial feelings of love and admiration. However, you are also given the idea that there is darkness behind their relationship. The fact that it is coming from a child's point of view makes it that much more powerful.

Pain and hopelessness. There is an immediate pang of these emotions while reading this poem. The writer makes you feel as if they cannot be without the person they've lost. They are convinced that nothing will ever again have meaning. A really empty feeling is perceived and it is easy to empathize with.

The idea that sticks out the most in this poem is progress.Brooks is provides a motivational feel. It enforces that we may not always feel up to it but we have to keep going. It is important to live in the now. Making the best of a current situation is important in any setting.

This poem brings about feelings of moving forward. It too seem like a poem focused on progression. The writer describes the feeling of losing someone as a disaster. Losing someone can feel like a tornado of emotions, wrecking everything else. However, that is only how it appears.

The writer of this poem gives a feeling of being concealed. All of the emotions are covered behind the "mask". They are not to be expressed or revealed. Dunbar does a good job of hinting at the feeling of entrapment. We sometimes conceal our feelings so much that eventually we can't take off the mask.

Although the exact relationship of the old woman and the boy is unclear the whipping does not seem like a one time event. There are emotions of pure rage and fear coming from the characters. Whatever event caused such violence was with someone that she once loved. In hurting him she is now purged from whatever it may have been there was to hide. There is an overall sense of relief at the end.

There is a dark ominous feel to this poem. Austerlitz, Waterloo, Gettysburg, all huge battles that took many lives. The way that they are written about seems very nonchalant. Pile them, cover them, forget them. It seems like a metaphor for how we tend to forget what we fought for and who was lost in the process.

She offers him protection. That is the first thing that comes to mind when there is a comparison to a tent. Shelter and safety are what the writer seems to want but not necessarily what she is providing. "Strictly held by none" indicates that maybe he cannot be held down. Even so, there is a clear adoration from the writer towards whomever she may be.
