After leaving the Aeolian islands Odysseus has to face two sea monsters living in the Strait of Messina. On Circe’s advice, he chooses to sail for Scylla, a six-headed sea serpent rather than Charybdis, a giant whirlpool. He thought it was better to sacrifice six of his men to feed Scylla instead of having the whole ship destroyed. According to the myth, the currents in the Strait of Messina were explained with the presence of these monsters.

The fountain in the photo was commissioned to Giovan Angelo Montorsoli in  1557. This Michelangelo’s favourite created a new type of fountain with the central statue of Neptune, who originally turned his back on the sea and protected the town with his arm. Due to the bombings in 1848, both statues of Neptune and Scylla have been replaced by two copies, whereas the original ones are housed in Regional Museum of Messina now. Scylla is chained and is screaming, she is desperately tearing her hair out.

Polyphemus was a cyclops with a single eye. Homer narrates that Ulysses, while trying to return to Ithaca from Troy, landed in the land of the Cyclops. He and his companions were captured by the giant. To escape, Ulysses offered the giant a strong wine, and while he was sleeping they blinded him with a wooden stick. The next morning they fled hiding among the sheep, but Polyphemus discovered them and threw stones against them. Ulysses made a mistake because while mocking the Cyclops he revealed his real identity. So Polyphemus begged his father, Poseidon, not to let him go home. These rocks today characterize the coast of Aci Trezza, a fishing village near Catania.
Cyclops islands are named after the legend of Polyphemus who would have thrown at Ulysses big rocks, today the so-called Faraglioni. In reality, they are lava stones, which formed due to an intense volcanic activity about a year and a half ago. Today the Cyclops archipelago is a marine protected area.

Ulysses accepts the advice of Circe, a sorceress. Therefore, he starts again his journey to Ithaca. One of the difficulties is to overtake two sheer rocks. Not even a bird may slip unhurt. Here waves are strong and dangerous. These two cliffs are identified with the present-day Pietra Lunga and Pietra Menalda, in the channel between the two Aeolian islands Lipari and Vulcano.

The scene represents Ulysses while Maron, priest of Apollo, is giving the wineskin, which will serve to get Polyphemus drunk,  as it is told in Book 9 of Odyssey by Homer.


This crater was maybe inspired by a satirical drama, since the figures seem to be on a stage.


This work of art can be admired in the Archaeological museum “Luigi Bernabò Brea” of Lipari.

Ulysses is the hero we have decided to deal with in this project. He is a character from Greek mythology and he is described by Homer in the Iliad and in the Odyssesy. Ulysses is famous for his smartness because thanks to a trap designed by him the Achaeans succeeded in setting Troy. 


During his long journey back to Ithaca, Ulysses also arrives in Sicily, where the hero experienced some of his most famous adventures.

Related to the bogeyman is the sacamantecas, a character who abducts children and women to remove their fat. He uses them to make ointments, oils and soaps. His origin could be the Middle Ages, since during those years body fat was highly valued.

From its central position, Apollo, the Greek god of the fine arts and light, watches over the population as if he were Charles III himself, who was unable to see the work completed as it was delayed due to a lack of stone for its construction. Designed by Ventura Rodríguez, it was executed by Alfonso Giraldo Bergaz (Apollo) and Manuel Álvarez El Griego (the rest of the figures). Its most characteristic feature is the slate dome with gold inlay. Above it was originally a bronze allegorical statue in honour of the Phoenix, a long-lived bird which, according to Greek mythology, regenerates itself from the ashes of its predecessor. Above it was a human figure with raised arm representing Ganymede, a handsome Trojan prince abducted by Zeus to become cupbearer to the gods.
