Hiking Safety Tips for Novices

A former general manager with Advanced Automotive and Advanced Rentals, Isaiah Kingston has served Washakie Renewable Energy, LLC, as its chief financial officer since 2009. In addition to creating company tax strategies, he manages the budget and contributes to revenue optimization efforts. Beyond his professional duties, Isaiah Kingston enjoys hiking in Utah. Below are some safety tips for novice hikers.

1. Hike in groups. While a casual stroll in a well-trodden area does not present much danger, hiking through dense woodland creates more opportunities to get lost. By hiking with partners, you are less likely to panic in such situations. You also gain the advantage of pooled resources and knowledge.

2. Always carry rain gear. Quality rain gear will provide protection from the elements should the weather change. If it does rain, you should find shelter as quickly as possible so you can get dry and lower the risk of hypothermia.

3. Bring water. Carry as much water as you need, bearing in mind that water weighs about eight pounds per gallon. You should only drink from natural water sources in emergency situations, as such water can contain harmful bacteria.

New Bill Supports Incentives for Domestic Biofuel Producers

For the past eight years, Isaiah Kingston has served as the CFO of Washakie Renewable Energy (WRE), LLC, a Utah-based company that produces advanced biofuels and chemicals. Responsible for the business’ financial operations, Isaiah Kingston oversees budget, business plan implementation, and hedging needs to ensure WRE remains a leader in biofuel production in the United States.

A recent bill introduced in the Senate hopes to alter and extend the tax credit for US biodiesel producers. It was written in light of the continued increase in biofuel imports over the past several years. Between 2014 and 2016, biofuel imports have increased from 510 million gallons to roughly 1 billion gallons. Experts estimate that this increase will continue in 2017, as first quarter imports for the year are already 10 percent higher than that of the same period last year.

Although the increasing amount of biofuel imports suggests a growing demand in the United States, domestic biodiesel facilities have been struggling to compete with their foreign counterparts. This is due to the many foreign subsidies that their counterparts receive, along with an existing tax credit from the US that has paid over $600 million to imported renewable diesel.

The new bill, known as the American Renewable Fuel and Job Creation Act of 2017, hopes to give domestic producers a better chance in the market. According to the bill, the $1-per-gallon biofuel tax credit should be extended for three years. However, instead of benefiting biofuel blenders, many of which are located overseas, it should benefit producers. In doing so, taxpayers are supporting domestic fuel rather than imported fuel, and domestic biodiesel producers are incentivized to grow and provide more US jobs.

Dr. Harry D. Fornari’s Significant Impact on the AFOA

For more than five years, Isaiah Kingston has handled financial and business strategy at Washakie Renewable Energy, LLC, as the chief financial officer. Active within the professional community, Isaiah Kingston of Utah belongs to such organizations as the American Fats and Oils Association (AFOA).

Committed to improving trade relations within the oils and fats industry, the AFOA was largely developed by Dr. Harry D. Fornari. With a PhD in history from Columbia University, he served as the president of the AFOA twice and was the director and executive director of the organization from 1973 until his death. For close to 30 years, he was deeply committed to the AFOA, which many professionals in the field viewed as coterminous with Dr. Fornari himself.

Throughout his time with the AFOA, Dr. Fornari worked to nationalize and internationalize its reach. He played an integral role in quadrupling the AFOA’s membership over the course of several decades, and the structure he gave to the association remains in place today. Given his passion for educating the trade, the AFOA has continued his tradition of inviting speakers from the industry and has maintained the Harry D. Fornari Memorial Lecture in his honor since 2001.
