In doing so, they also have the chance to develop assimilation as they begin to realize similarities between the objects grouped on the cards. Lastly, children are participating in active learning
through “hands on” manipulation of materials.

My first issue is that some of the blocks in this set are too big and heavy. When I received a shipment of this, I thought that some of the blocks should be packed away since it can be a weapon or it can hurt the kids. Kids like to stack things up high and if it falls on them, it would hurt. Especially since their biggest block is 8 1/2 inches. While I think some of the blocks are perfect for that age, I would be very cautious putting out all of them especially when kids are not supervised. This toy is recommended for ages 3-7. It is said to help build communication as well as cognitive skills of being able to sequence events. I have this toy in my classroom thinking it would be a great way to get my non-verbal student to talk and show me they understand routine. This is one of my favorite toys in my classroom that I feel like really does help my 3-5 year old students with their cognitive development. My students will engage with this toy in so many ways. They will count the people as they put them in the car and see how many match the number up front. It also helps develop the concepts and longer and shorter since they talk about the size of their cars with their peers. It promotes pretend play, as the student pack up their "families" for a trip to the store. These are Lakeshore counting cones which the manufacturer’s recommended age range is for  3 year olds -6 year olds.  I think these ice cream counting cones are age appropriate and do meet the developmental needs of the students. This toy can serve many purposes in the different developmental domains such as cognitive, language, and social emotional. They primarily focus is one-to-one correspondence to 10.  Students are able to match the number of scoops represented on each cone. The manufacturer states that its frustration is free and I agree. I have this counting toy set in my classroom and my 3,4, and 5 year old have a great time playing. They can be differentiated for each of the ages. The students who have higher number sense can be given the cones with the larger numbers. For those students who are just starting to learn to count can use these cones as a matching by color game as they gain understanding of number concepts. My students also use these cones in the dramatic play center and are able to have conversations about how many scoops they would like for each of their cone.

I disagree with the manufacturer's recommended age because straw connectors require great fine motor skills that a 3 year old might not have yet.  I recently purchased  this toy for my classroom thinking it would work great for my 3 and 4 year old students. It was difficult for them to assemble it independently. The students could not put the two connectors together without support. This toy is a great way to incorporate cognitive, social, emotional, fine motor, and language for those students with great fine motor skills. I think students can continue to strengthen their fine motor skills by trying this game a couple times a week, however, some students might get frustrated causing some tantrums. Students want to try and build the pictures they see from the connectors booklet and get discouraged when they can’t create a simple piece because the connectors are hard to assemble.

These counters are aged 3+. I believe this is developmentally appropriate and can be utilized in a variety of ways to meet the growth and development of the child. It can be used to build fine motor skills and cognitive skills (sorting, counting, etc.). At this age, children are still developing their fine motor skills. They should be able grasp the counters and use the tweezers to grab the counters and place them in the correct color cup. Cognitive development such as the counting or sorting may start at 3; however, may also progress to 4 depending on the child.

The LEGO Classic bricks state they are for ages 4-99. I do not believe that 4 is an appropriate age to begin using these blocks. Children at this age are still building their fine motor skills. At this age, they are expected to be able to build towers of 9 blocks; however, I believe that the duplo blocks are better suited for younger children. They will most likely be more successful with manipulating the blocks (e.g. taking apart) and will build their self-confidence which will allow them to want to continue to practice these skills.

This picture is from Lakeshore.  They are liquid floor tiles for ages 3-6. What I love about these is that they are engaging for the kids with gross motor skills. They are at a time when they are doing everything that they can to use those gross motor skills and these help initiate that. Students can also join with each other and play on these as a part of social interactions and pretend play. They would have to learn how to take turns and establish rules in their playing.

This Ice Cream Counter play set would be great for the recommended ages of 3-6. This toy would be great for the following domains: cognitive, fine motor, social/emotional/behavioral, and language. Students would be able to count money, ice cream scoops, perhaps make patters with the ice cream flavors as other cognitive skills. In the are of fine motor, they would use their hand muscles to use the tongs and ice cream scoop to make their dessert creations. As far as social/emotional/behavioral skills, pre-k students would be able to practice the skills of waiting for their turn, cooperating with others through dramatic play, and sharing the materials. As far as language, they would be able to take orders, build the creations, describe what they are building, practice using their good manners, etc. There are so many fun and engaging ways for pre-k students to use this play set, I feel it would be a great asset for the classroom.

This toy is from Amazon and is marketed towards the ages from 3-7 years old. At first I thought this seemed like a great toy for fine motor skills and cognitive skills, but when considering the students in my current pre-k classroom, I decided that the age of 3 and maybe even 4 may be too young to use this building toy. My concern with this toy is that for some of my 3 and 4 year old students that put things in their mouthes, the sphere pieces which include magnets could be a choking hazard. This assignment made me consider the ways in which my students may differ from other "general education" students in each of the domains. What may be appropriate for the general pre-k population may in fact be dangerous for my students to play with without supervision. Either way, sped or general ed students at ages 3 and 4 may still put toys in their mouthes and that is why it is important to always supervise young children and make sure that the items they are playing with are safe.

Alphabet Locks would not be appropriate for three year olds. Although they may be appropriate for fine motor skills if they are working with an adult. The student would have to already know their letters to be able to complete the task. Cognitively, I think the student would become frustrated by the task. 

 

Fisher Price Barn

The Fisher Price Barn would be appropriate for three year olds. The pieces are big enough to where the child could play without being a choking hazard. It has a cause and effect component in that if the child presses the button or bell a sound is made. It also encourages pretend play. The child could play independently or with another person.

The advertising of the product showing the young toddler using the product is misleading as I would be concerned with the poms poms being a choking hazard. Young children especially toddlers are still exploring with their senses and like to put objects into their mouths. I disagree with the advertising of the material and the toddler shown using the product. I was unsure what I was looking at when I searched the age range of this product. When I saw 12 months and up, I actually thought it was a typo as it probably is? At 12 months of age what could happen if one of the bolts in the back become loose? At 12 months, children are still putting things in their mouth. This alone would be a terrible tragedy. Plus, developmentally, the only thing that would intrigue a 12 month old would be spinning the wheel. I think this toy would be developmentally appropriate for a child from 6 to 12 months. I disagree with the reccomended age of this toy because it seems too advanced. The shapes that are given on the cards do not seem realistic as to what a 3 year old child is able to create. I think that to benefit their cognitive development, the shapes should be simple.
