A war with Mexico had to be fought to gain this Territory. Many people supported the war, but some thought the fighting would have stopped quickly. This caused there to be protests including ones in magazines, pamphlets, and newspapers. People called the war Polk’s war, after the president who they were mad at. Polk questioned these people’s patriotism. People who opposed slavery believed that the war was a Southern scheme to expand slavery because Polk supported slavery, and it could be brought into the Mexican Territory.

For example, the protests only happened during the war, the worry about slavery did not affect people in this territory after all.
