Mindfulness: Youth Voices

The most powerful aspect of this video it that you see and hear from actual students. This instant connection students can make with others through a film will allow them to be more comfortable discussing what is means to be mindful. As students share their own experiences about stressors in life, others will be able to make connections and see how using mindful techniques can help one to calm down and be present in the moment. In this particular episode, the two discuss the implications of social media use on young teens. The great thing about this podcast is that teens can hear about issues that affect them from people their own age, whereas most of the time advice is given from adults. The podcast includes guest speakers from schools around the nation such as counselors and teachers who discuss ways that students can take care of their own mental health. The podcast is available through Spotify and other platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

References
The ups and downs of social media. (2021, June 25). Alvarez is a life coach and yoga instructor for teenage girls, and has used her background to create a podcast that caters to this cohort. This series is also directed as mothers of teenage girls, and would be a great bonding experience since this age can cause divides when it comes to the adolescent and parent relationship. This episode is a 9 minute guided meditation to help relieve stress from daily life. The short time span is perfect for young teens who are constantly busy throughout the day, and Alvarez is someone young girls can connect to as they navigate their teenage years.

References
Alyssa Alvarez.

Headspace is an awesome resource that is used by many schools, organizations, and young adolescents. The group is focused on providing articles, videos, and graphics to reduce stress, time manage, and help people to meditate of all ages. Headspace has a specific section for young adolescents, and they have a free option. The great thing about this helpline is that the platform is available as an app, so young adolescents can reach out for help without it being obvious or known to people around them. As far as the helpline, there are no phone numbers for Headspace. They do have 4 different email accounts to contact for varying needs, such as technical questions and anything one would require. The most helpful email to young adolescents would be info@headspace.com. Many teens use this app to help them fall asleep at night, since it includes relaxing sounds. This is a great stepping stone to introduce mindfulness and it something that could be introduced in the school setting.

References
Questions about Headspace. (n.d.).

My Thoughts Are Clouds: Poems for Mindfulness by Georgia Heard
IL: 4-6

In this collection of poems Heard helps young teens understand their emotions by connecting them to the weather. It is no secret that teenagers go through a range of emotions, and many have a difficult time identifying what they are feeling. The purpose of these poems is to break down words like ADHD, anxiety, and depression into visuals and things that students can connect with. This collection is age appropriate for young middle school students (grades 5-6) and is valuable in introducing these topics before many of them take a health class. Understanding emotions and fighting stigmas is hard for anyone, and this poem book aims to not only let young teens know that what they are feeling is okay, but that there are ways to channel their feelings positively.

References
Heard, G. She is used to being popular and is shocked one morning to find herself in the body of Tracey Devon, one of the girls she bullied. Amanda knows that Tracey comes from a bad home life, but didn't realize that she has the power to become invisible! Through Tarcey's body, Amanda learns of a special class at Meadowbrook Middle School where all of the students have unique gifts, and must figure out how to get her own life back. This book is an excellent read for embracing the differences among teenagers and taking away the stigma of special classes as being a negative. By combing a magical aspect, this book is a great hook for powerful conversations about inclusion and what it means to be special as a teenager.

References
Kaye, M.
