White Americans were scared, "whites who feared losing their jobs to blacks." In order for whites to stay powerful they needed to establish a legal way of discriminating against blacks and the Jim Crow Laws were the means of doing so. The Jim Crow Laws were established to allow "any state law passed in the South that established different rules for blacks and whites" to be passed.
