I was an average student throughout grade school who was good at math but struggled with reading and writing. I was born and raised in Vietnam for the first half of my life so, English was not my first language which made it a lot harder for me to learn how to read, write, and speak. I came to America not knowing what to expect. It was a whole new lifestyle that I had to slowly adapt to. Although learning a whole new language was extremely difficult, I still challenged myself to learn more about the literature and language.

As I got older, my english eventually got better meaning I can read, write, and communicate with others a lot more than usual. It honestly brought up my confidence level to the point where I was no longer shy around people, making it a lot easier for me to socialize with others. With that being said, It was a skill that I had to learn and develop as a kid in order to meet new people and make friends.

Once I got to high school, I didn’t struggle with reading and writing as much but I still never liked it. I didn’t realize how important literature and language were until I took my first English class in college with Mrs. Doty. She taught me a lot of useful skills that I still use til this day. Not only did I learn new skills, but she also opened up my mind forcing me to become more creative with my writing. She honestly gave me a whole new mindset which allowed me to be able to look through different perspectives in life. By the end of the semester, I knew for a fact that my ability to express ideas, thoughts, and knowledge has grown because my writing skills has improved tremendously.

By writing what we learned or what we believe, we are learning how to express ourselves. Before I took Mrs. Doty’s class, I never knew what it was like or how to express my feelings and thoughts. It was always difficult and hard, until I was forced to think outside the box. All of the essays that I had to write were always related to the problems that I was going through at the moment. So therefore, writing was a way for me to express my feelings when I had nobody to talk to. It helped out with the situation a lot because I had found my voice and who I am as person through writing.

The class honestly opened up my mind to be able to see how powerful a written word and language can be. Although I have learned a lot of important skills, there are always room for growth and development. For example, Proofreading and editing is extremely important in writing because I can always make my essays better if I just go back and revise. I either go to the writing center for help or even send it to SmartThinking for them to revise it. Once it is submitted and turned in, I’ll get the paper back with feedbacks that gives a lot of advices to help out for my next paper. The feedbacks are there to tell me what I did well on and also stuff that I need to improve on.
Finally, I feel the need to personally thank Mrs. Doty for helping me develop new useful skills and also shred all the bad habits of writing to take my writing skills to another level.
