You are an educator in a primary school setting and the bi/multilingual family of a child you are teaching are reluctant to share their experiences and/or concerns about their child's languages learning and use. How do you approach this family so that you can engage in a positive, supportive and responsive conversation about bi/multilingualism and identity negotiation?

Many students feel “reluctant and embarrassed” about expressing their culture and more specifically talking in their home language. To deal with this dilemma I would ensure that my classroom was as welcoming as possible this would be done through cultural education (food days, dancing/ cultural activities) to ensure the “field” in which the children are learning is safe and accepting

There are many bilingual children where I work. I always encourage them to "teach me how to say...." in their home language and let all the children know that I value learning other languages. This has sparked other children's interest in learning words from another language. I will continue to do this is a primary teacher.
