1. More regimentation. Basically like Detention Barracks. Make the experience so terrible that they obey. Utilising a military regime builds their character, and facilitates obedience to rules and regulations in the future.
2. Introduce salaried labor work for released inmates who are unable to find work/feel like they are prone to reoffending, to let them work in a structured and supervised environment.

Dao Liang, Jing Ya, Joel, Viddette, Yong Kiong, Jia Xiang

How are inmates disciplined in prisons?

Current practices in prison have different variations depending on the severity of offenses.

Offenses such as causing grievous hurt in the cell, inmates may have their ⅓ remission revoked or have their sentence extended. Other methods of disciplining inmates include punishment cells where inmates will be moved into individual cells, basic privileges will also be removed, it is also noted that the length of stay in the punishment cells can vary depending on the severity of offense. Involvement in fights with other inmates may result in corporal punishment - caning.

(2) Imagine you are the Director of a penal institution. What is your ideal prison setting for punishment and rehabilitation?

Inmates usually struggle at the initial stage of their incarceration due to existing issues before they enter prisons. Conducting an induction programme for new intakes to set their expectation on the do’s and don’ts, such as informing them of the consequences of bad conduct in the prison will result in punishment listed above. Installation of surveillance cameras and irregular inspection will further promote safe-regulation among the prisoners.

Apart from expectations, emotional attachment may also contribute to anxiety and misbehavior in the prisoners. Family members can be more involved in inmates incarceration in the initial stage, to help inmates cope with behavioral issues.

Physical infrastructure should be designed with rehabilitation in mind such as having open settings which may promote better mental well-being and facilities for prisoners to exercise self-reflection and take up useful skills for post-prison life. There should be a good balance between security and an environment which can promote better mental health as security of prison is still paramount.

Rehabilitative programmes and training should be accessible by prisoners such as engaging counselors, community, job-specific training and academic programmes. These will reduce the feeling of being excluded and at the same time, equip the prisoners with useful revenue generating skills, hopefully, will reduce the rate of recidivism.

- XX
- Haikal
- Sebastian
- Jackson
- Azri
