The Home has a target to "discharge" the residents and reintegrate into society. I salute their framework to help them Reconcile with their family, Bring in volunteers and befrienders to help them Rehabilitate - incl socialising with others, engage in their Home Employment Programme, help them aspire to be employed the intent to Reintegrate them to be economically independent in society.

The carpet design showed me how organisations can strengthen identity by incorporating local culture into their spaces. Similarly, in school we can create learning experiences that connect students to the community, making learning more authentic and rooted in real-world context.

The hotel’s use of a Singapore street map helped create a sense of belonging for guests. This reminded me of how important it is for our school to create welcoming spaces where students feel connected, valued, and grounded. This can be powerful tools for engagement and learning not only our students, partners and guests invited but also our school image to create a learning journey as well.

At JW Marriott, the motto “Success is never final” and the philosophy “Take care of your associates, and your associates will take care of the guests” illustrates a culture of continuous improvement and people-centred leadership. This reinforces the importance of sustaining morale, recognising efforts, and developing staff competencies, practices that directly parallel NLS’s approach to uplifting staff capacity and maintaining service excellence in teaching and operations.

At Pullman Hill Street, the commitment to respect, understanding, and trust across all levels emphasises a psychologically safe work environment where staff are valued partners in service delivery. This mirrors our aspiration in NLS to build a collaborative, respectful culture where staff feel confident to innovate and contribute to school improvement efforts.

At Grand Hyatt, the organisation’s purpose, “We care for people so they can be their best”, is anchored in values such as empathy, integrity, inclusion, experimentation, and wellbeing. Such intentional culture-building demonstrates how values-driven leadership translates into strong service culture and consistent performance outcomes.

Collectively, these insights affirm that Organisational Excellence in NLS must continue to be grounded in empowering people, strengthening systems, and living out shared values. By nurturing our staff, aligning processes, and modelling a values-based culture, we can elevate the overall student experience and sustain NLS as a caring, future-ready organisation.

• Our students often face physical and mental demands prior to their Y3 IEP.

Define (framing the problem)

• Students might not be prepared for their Y3 IEP.

Ideate (generating solutions)

• PE department - They have already incorporate Strength and Fitness Conditioning into their PE SOW in Term 1 to prepare the students physically.

• Suggestion to YHs - Maybe work with the IEP team to plan industry visits in Y1 and Y2 during their OLE OLE Week. Prepare students to have some ideas of how each industry is and what the demands are. Similar to what Y3 did for their OLE OLE week.

It's important to gather some feedback (facilitated by teachers) from students after their visits.

Our students came to NorthLight because they failed PSLE. Many of them had the shame factor attached to them. How can we reframe this mentality and help them build a stronger and more positive bond with NorthLight School?

Some ideas:

1. Use CFT/social skills to do activities that allow our kids understand the history of NLS?

2. Regularly invite ex-students to come back to give talks.

3. Reframing of mentality - Is failure the end or the necessary pathway to success?

1. Gamification of the Release-on-Supervision process (what we know as tagging.)

2. Challenges faced by the offenders: lack of motivation, adjustment issues, lack of pro-social activities, lack of opportunities to make amends, risk of abscondment

3. Offenders will collect points based on their activities. Points will then be used to:

   1. Reduce the consequences of disciplinary actions, and

   2. Reduce the sentence.

4. Shown to be effective for giving the offenders a sense of ownership. Also builds community as they engage in pro-social activities through discussing with each other how to get the most points, etc.

Such a gamified system for handling consequences might work well for NLS students. Throughout the two days of SWEe, we agreed that there are many similarities between the young offenders and NLS students.

The job is highly dependent on weather conditions, when the weather turns bad, work has to be delayed. Collaboration and communication are essential in land surveying, and I noticed that many of the staff started from ground zero. With the right attitude, they have progressed to where they are today. This is very relatable to our NLS students, as we always advise them to have an open mind, a willing heart, and a never-give-up attitude.

Surveyors also need to stay updated with evolving tools and technology to make their work more efficient. The staff value hands-on training, much like our students who go through work attachment.

This deeper understanding would enhance staff competence and classroom effectiveness, while also building confidence in supporting students with SEN—thereby reducing anxiety or uncertainty when working with them.

Strengthening collaboration between AWWA and NLS would further enrich learning for both students and staff. As reflected in Joanna’s and my posters (available in the shared Google Drive reflection), closer partnerships would better prepare staff in lesson planning and in supporting diverse learners, while helping students appreciate that they may eventually work with or alongside adults with special needs.

Overall, these initiatives contribute to a more capable, confident, and inclusive school community by broadening perspectives and deepening understanding.

At NorthLight School, we can continue to create more authentic platforms for students, especially those who are not student leaders to step up, celebrating progress over perfection, ensuring caring adults journey closely with them.
