They are homeless for a few reasons, including isolated from family and "disowned" or chased out of the house by them. The residents seemed very contented and at peace here. Here they have a shelter over their heads, food to eat and facilities for shower and laundry.

The Home has a target to "discharge" the residents and reintegrate into society. I salute their framework to help them Reconcile with their family, Bring in volunteers and befrienders to help them Rehabilitate - incl socialising with others, engage in their Home Employment Programme, help them aspire to be employed the intent to Reintegrate them to be economically independent in society.

Pullman uses a Singapore street-map design to give meaning and identity to their space reminded me that our school environment can also shape how students feel and learn. It made me think about how purposeful design—whether in corridors, classrooms, or shared spaces—can help build school culture and pride.”

The carpet design showed me how organisations can strengthen identity by incorporating local culture into their spaces. Similarly, in school we can create learning experiences that connect students to the community, making learning more authentic and rooted in real-world context.

The hotel’s use of a Singapore street map helped create a sense of belonging for guests. This reminded me of how important it is for our school to create welcoming spaces where students feel connected, valued, and grounded. This can be powerful tools for engagement and learning not only our students, partners and guests invited but also our school image to create a learning journey as well.

Organisational Excellence (NLS) – Synthesised from SWEe Learning Journeys

The Learning Journeys to JW Marriott, Pullman Singapore Hill Street, and Grand Hyatt highlighted how high-performing organisations achieve excellence by intentionally aligning people, processes, and organisational values. Across all three hotels, a consistent theme emerged: when staff feel cared for, supported, and trusted, they are empowered to deliver exceptional service that elevates guest satisfaction and strengthens the organisation’s reputation.

At JW Marriott, the motto “Success is never final” and the philosophy “Take care of your associates, and your associates will take care of the guests” illustrates a culture of continuous improvement and people-centred leadership. This reinforces the importance of sustaining morale, recognising efforts, and developing staff competencies, practices that directly parallel NLS’s approach to uplifting staff capacity and maintaining service excellence in teaching and operations.

At Pullman Hill Street, the commitment to respect, understanding, and trust across all levels emphasises a psychologically safe work environment where staff are valued partners in service delivery. This mirrors our aspiration in NLS to build a collaborative, respectful culture where staff feel confident to innovate and contribute to school improvement efforts.

At Grand Hyatt, the organisation’s purpose, “We care for people so they can be their best”, is anchored in values such as empathy, integrity, inclusion, experimentation, and wellbeing. Such intentional culture-building demonstrates how values-driven leadership translates into strong service culture and consistent performance outcomes.

Collectively, these insights affirm that Organisational Excellence in NLS must continue to be grounded in empowering people, strengthening systems, and living out shared values. By nurturing our staff, aligning processes, and modelling a values-based culture, we can elevate the overall student experience and sustain NLS as a caring, future-ready organisation.

Singapore Oceanarium showcases the breeding of sea jellies and planktons, which is visible to the public and visitors. This breeding programme used to be a back-of-house feature. We can take a leaf out of the oceanarium's playbook by showcasing and involving students in the 'back-of-house' features of NLS. For example, students can get involved with OM on the cleanliness aspects of the school. HAMALA learners can provide ideas to teachers who are in the midst of crafting new lessons. Trial lessons can be carried out with selected HAMALA students.

For instance, for Preschool - a Kinesthetic learning approach, for primary school - an Experiential learning approach, for Secondary and post-secondary - a Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach and for Educators (teachers' PD) - a blend of physical learning journey and PBL. NLS can adopt such an approach for different group of learners when developing curriculum and designing instruction.

There were many Environmental Friendly practices, features and facilities in Singapore Oceanarium. For example the oceanarium used Displacement Ventilation for its air-conditioning. Displacement ventilation supplies cool, fresh air at the floor level. As the air warms up, it rises naturally, carrying heat with it to the ceiling, where it is then extracted. This process relies on natural convection rather than fans, which is more energy-efficient and quieter. NLS can consider similar kinds of system for future building management. In addition, the oceanarium has underwater 'art' installation that seeks to raise and capture awareness of the public and learners of the damage that pollution has caused to our natural and man-made environment. These exhbits are new and seeks to educate the current and future generation on the negative impact of climate change. Lastly the RELC (Research and Learning Centre) functions fully on solar panels for its electricity source. NLS can have selected rooms or facilities that are fully operated on solar panels.

Something that I was struck by was how each tool they used had appropriate context for it's use, which made me reflect on edtech and how the use should be appropriate to our contexts as well.

My experience at YJP Surveyors showed me that this is not an office-bound job. It involves hard labour, such as carrying equipment to and from the site, and the tools used are often expensive. Surveyors also need to meet clients’ deadlines and expectations, making it a truly hands-on and demanding role.

The job is highly dependent on weather conditions, when the weather turns bad, work has to be delayed. Collaboration and communication are essential in land surveying, and I noticed that many of the staff started from ground zero. With the right attitude, they have progressed to where they are today. This is very relatable to our NLS students, as we always advise them to have an open mind, a willing heart, and a never-give-up attitude.

Surveyors also need to stay updated with evolving tools and technology to make their work more efficient. The staff value hands-on training, much like our students who go through work attachment.

During the SWEE attachment, I began to consider whether it would be beneficial for all staff to participate in a mandatory attachment at both AWWA School @ Bedok and AWWA Day Activity Centre (DAC), rather than attending a brief learning journey. Such exposure would provide meaningful insights into the differing special needs profiles across AWWA and NLS, while equipping staff with practical strategies in teaching, behaviour management, creating calming spaces, and implementing differentiated instruction.

This deeper understanding would enhance staff competence and classroom effectiveness, while also building confidence in supporting students with SEN—thereby reducing anxiety or uncertainty when working with them.

Strengthening collaboration between AWWA and NLS would further enrich learning for both students and staff. As reflected in Joanna’s and my posters (available in the shared Google Drive reflection), closer partnerships would better prepare staff in lesson planning and in supporting diverse learners, while helping students appreciate that they may eventually work with or alongside adults with special needs.

Overall, these initiatives contribute to a more capable, confident, and inclusive school community by broadening perspectives and deepening understanding.

One key lesson from my shadowing experience was that words are not always necessary to calm a triggered autistic child. I observed how picture cards, showing simple actions or expected routines, helped the child understand what to do next. These visual cues were far more effective than verbal instructions and supported the child in settling down quickly. This reinforced the importance of using visual communication when working with SEN children.

Students across different levels and profiles were encouraged to stand in front of the school—whether leading morning assembly, raising the flag, emceeing the Awards Ceremony, or performing on stage. Even when their speech was unclear, or when they forgot what to say or the dance moves, teachers stood by with patience, reassurance, and genuine care. This gentle, unwavering guidance sent a powerful message: every child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported as they try.

At NorthLight School, we can continue to create more authentic platforms for students, especially those who are not student leaders to step up, celebrating progress over perfection, ensuring caring adults journey closely with them.
