This wall represents my thinking of the role of multigualism in schools. Teachers and heads of schools should ensure that the mother tongue of students is given equal importance if not more than the main language taught in school. The different colours on the wall represent different languages and there is a divide between the languages but not a harsh divide. So we as teachers and leaders have to ensure that the child is encourage to show his thinking through his mother tongue if he not a native speaker. This will help teachers understand what is going on in the mind of students who cannot speak in English. This also helps the teachers to understand why the child is restless on the carpet when the teacher is communicating in a language that a child does not understand. So here the teacher capability, "foster supportive environments that remove barriers to learning" is very important if we want to create an inclusive environment for these students so that their learning is not hindered. So making use of parents and other older students to come in and support those students who are not native speakers is vey important.

The other teacher capability which is imperative to make this happen is designinquiries using local and global context. Involve parents to come in to talk about different cultures and traditions in class so that every child gets to understand what these concepts mean in different languages. Celebrations is a great unit to make this happen as it lends itself to a plethora of traditions and customs where parents can be used as an important tool.

And finally, the teacher capability that helps to encourage multilingualism in school is build/develop conceptual understanding within and across subjects so that learning is transdiciplinary in the different subject areas. This enables the students to make connections across the curricula and enables their brains to develop cognitively. The use of literature in different languages is a powerful tool to make this happen and also the use of technology is yet another wonderful way to integrate multilingualism.
