- which place would be academically stimulating?

- consider the costs of travel, accommodation and food

- consider where the workshop was in the last few years (2023: Lodz; 2022: Zagreb; 2020: Salzburg; 2018: Thessaloniki; 2017: Budapest)

…for the orga team:

- it is highly advisable to have a “local” (language barriers; logistics etc.)

- it is also useful to have a native English speaker and a native German speaker (you will need these languages to apply for funding)

…for the topic:

- it should be open enough, so that many people are eligible

- it should fit to the topics of participants who want to return as speakers

- in general it is good to get advice from people who have already been at the workshop before, this includes the current orga team. Talk with them during the week, get to know them, and engage!

- The whole group is responsible for this process. It is thus really important that no one leaves early and/or misses this final discussion, since it is an integral part of the workshop. You are all in this together! - Enjoy! ;)

Since 1994 the speakers and participants of the Workshop on the History and Memory of National Socialist Camps and Killing Sites decide collectively about the location, the topic, and the orga team of the next workshop.

This discussion usually begins during the first coffee break and continues into the final night. A formal decision is reached in a session before the farewell dinner, after the current orga team resigned.

This process is entirely up to the speakers and participants and part of the bottom-up, grass roots, democratic principles of the workshop.

Nevertheless, there are a few principles that developed over the years and have turned the workshop into what it is:

Anyone can join the workshop up to three times: once as a speaker, once as a participant, and once as a member of the orga team. The order is not fixed and you don’t have to join in consecutive workshops.

No one is allowed at the workshop, who submitted their PhD thesis before the application deadline.

The workshop is a non-hierarchical, democratic, and inclusive space. No form of discrimination is tolerated.
