Emma Oswalt, Monica Healy, and Hayden Witt take on the job of working behind the scenes in concessions from taking people's orders to accepting people's money in order to support our society. It was a busy night at Concessions, from little kids paying with change to walking tacos being a big hit last night. Hayden Witt said, “It was nice to volunteer for the NHS but too many little kids trying to order at once”. The comets traveled to Mendota to take on the trojans. The comets started off strong having a good lead the entire game. A huge key player in this game was Joe Oswalt who had many points for the comets. Joe pushed strong the entire game and made countless rebounds and points for the boys. Another key player was freshman Garret Matznick who played point guard the majority of the game. Garret pushed strong through the game and had several assists to get the comets their strong lead. One last key player is freshman Evan Bushman who made lots of three points for the comets. He stated, "Our team went into the game confident and with high hopes. Going into that game we didn't really have any doubt or discouragement. We came with a heavy mindset. We went into that game needing to focus on many things. Our defense was key in that game so that was on our minds for most of the time. I think all our thoughts after winning were how well we played as a team. It's hard to play a game with only one person executing the game well, but I think we did a great job executing as a whole. We are thankful for the win for sure." The final score of the game was 50-32. Rude beat St. Bede's Jordan Coventry to receive this accomplishment. Rude has been a Varsity wrestler all three years he's been at Newman and is team captain alongside sophomore Daniel Kelly. Carter had big shoes to fill with his older brother Will Rude winning State at 138 in 2020. When asked "How would you describe Carter?" Will Rude said, " I may be the state champ but that’s because of my unnatural strength, and violent attitude. When it comes down to pure technique and definition of a wrestler Carter is textbook the best around... He doesn’t have the genetic physical strength ... but he has everything else". As of that meet he has gone 31-2. The track team received a training schedule from the distance coach, Coach Warkins, that would get them in shape for the coming season. This schedule started the runners off slowly, building them up to more and more mileage. The four or five miles may seem a long distance for the short track races, but training more miles makes the races feel short and get the runners in better shape. Some runners have been using the treadmills in the weight room because Coach Warkins advised them to avoid the cold weather. When asked what she's most looking forward to this track season, Gianna Widolff said, "I'm looking forward to relays and running with the team. Training for track is fun because I can run whenever I want and however I feel." The smaller class has been travelling to the four feeder schools to lead them in rosaries, join them at Mass, and just be present in the schools. The students showed up early to Newman and took a sport bus over to St. Andrews. The students were then each assigned a grade level to sit with, and they talked a little with the students while they walked over to Mass. A key part of the organization of this event was Mr. Koerner, who planned the visit with the staff of St. Andrews. Another key part of the trip was Mr. Somers, who drove the bus and communicated with the Juniors about the plan for the day. After Mass, a few of the students talked with the younger grades about Newman before they came back to school. When asked what the goal of all these trips is, Mr. Koerner said, " 'Building the Bridge Together' is my slogan this year. The goal of our outreach is to make connections with the future generations of our Faith, School, and Community." Newman had several discover days throughout the year. Families tour each department of the school and talk to teachers. The tours are led by current Newman students from any grade. A huge key player in discover Newman days is sophomore Grace Geske who participates in almost every discover Newman day. Grace says, "I enjoy leading the tours because it feels like I'm helping the school grow not just in community but also in size. I get to meet a lot of fun and kind people that I will eventually look out for when they begin their journey here at Newman." Another huge key player is staff member Gehrig Koerner who organizes all the discover Newman days. He makes them very organized and run smoothly. One last key player is Mrs. Oetting who is always greeting the visiting families with a warm smile as the family walks through the door. Grace cares a lot about her studies and she always gives it her all in whatever she does. Grace stated "I work tirelessly on my studies resulting in me being a straight A student. I would also say that I'm very well known throughout the sophomore class and I always try my hardest to make everyone feel welcomed." Grace tends to spend her weekends hanging out with her siblings; Brett, Ben, and Haile. Her siblings Ben and Haile are both currently attending Newman as well. The musical is the first one since the Covid season. While asking Liam about how he feels about finally being able to do a musical. "All my years at Newman we haven't been able to do one because of Covid or we didn't have enough people join the cast". While the cast is busy with classes and other sports they are still making time to come to practices and to learn their lines. Even though Liam does wrestling he understands that being in the musical is very different. "It's quite different from sports in the aspect that I have to induce different talents into the occasion." Charlie Brown Cast Starts Rehearsals giannasagel https://padlet.com/Ms_Accardi/wrl25xo5lk5nukku/wish/2455041770 On January 23, 2023, the cast of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" continued rehearsals with more blocking. Though they have not started rehearsing in the actual performance space, they have been deciding what side of the stage they will enter from, and feeling out the different movements they will make on stage. They worked on the scene leading up to Linus's song, "My Blanket and Me," which will have choreography that includes blankets. A key person in rehearsals is Miss Accardi, who is the sole director present in rehearsal while Mrs. Ewers is sick. Looking forward, the cast will lose the scripts and go off-book on Presidents Day, and they will perform the show on March 9-12. The physics class on Friday the 20th and Tuesday the 24th of January, attempted to build race cars. The class separated into groups of three and got all the supplies they needed. Supplies making the cars run were rubber bands, wooden dowels, plastic wheels, and optional gears. The class had to build cars for two races, a speed race and a distance race. The cars had to be altered to change the speed and distance of how far and how fast they went. The groups went through many trials and error as they tried to make their car run. Raul Reyes group with Logan Hermeyer and Carson Palmer won both races. All three of these students were key players. They worked together to build an amazing race car and their teamwork really made their car successful. Ms. Cook is a huge key player who always helps when stuck in a difficult position and continues to make physics more fun. Raul stated with confidence, "We incorporated everyone's ideas and had a confident mindset. It felt pretty good to win twice and it boosted our egos." The fresh/soph boys started the game off strong, keeping the score very close. As soon as the second quarter hit, the comets started trailing behind the bruins. The comet shots were not being made and playing started to get unorganized. Frustrated at half, the comets tried to pull back the lead in the second half. Still unable to pull back the lead, the comets fell even more. A huge key player in this game was freshman Evan Bushman who always kept his head held high throughout the game and played his best the entire time. A key moment was after the game when the boys talked and all agreed that you can't win every game, they shook it off and watched the successful varsity game. Another key player is freshman Cooper Spears, who made lots of points for the comets and always pushed his way to the basket. He stated, "The game was rough. Honestly, we weren't really prepared to play. We started off flat, and didn't execute offensively and also didn't play great defense. It was a difficult loss but there are more games to come." The team was led by captain Michael Murray. Michael stated, "I was very anxious beforehand and even during the match". While the team was beginning to start the match. They thought that they would lose because of the score. However, we soon caught up to Rock Falls. Logan Devine had some words to say about the match also. "We were playing bad and they started beating us then we just stopped being bad and we won". When the team first got there we thought that we were going to lose coming off of last year's meet when we lost to both teams. Carson Palmer had so much insight about that. "We lost quite soundly last year, so a strong performance victory in 2023 was a pleasant change". Newman fought hard all through the game with it being a close game. Lily Oetting managed to steal the ball from Bureau Valley multiple times and run on the court and make her shot. She also made a 3 pointer shot in the fourth quarter. While Madison Duhon made an incredible shot as well. In the end they unfortunately lost 43-41. Helen Papoccia who hit two free throws said, "It was a game we felt like we could have won but even though we lost we are very proud of the improvement from when we first played them." After a long 11 weeks, he debuted at the Princeton & Le-Win Stockton triangular. Newman's 126-pounder proceeded to win both of his matches with pins in the first round. 138-pounder Cater Rude and 120-pounder Briar Ivey also had amazing nights. With all three going 2-0. Newman, unfortunately, lost to both Princeton and Le-Win. Coach Mags when asked "As a wrestling coach was there concern going into the Le-Win & Princeton meet with it being Brady's debut?" replied, " There was some trepidation, you know, first match jitters. Any time someone comes off a big injury you wonder if they still have it or not. But then you got to remember it's Brady Grennan, no mere mortal, and as soon as I saw him in lock up for the toss I knew he was going to be back to his old ways and hit the big moves that awe the crowd and put opponents on their back before they know it." Up next for Newman's wrestling team is Regionals at Riverdale.

When they arrived they got to go to the gym and they got to sit by the by the St. Andrew's kids. Once they were all settled, they got to pray a decade of the rosary together in Spanish. They also got to sing some songs together including "Here I'am Lord and Waymaker." They also talked about Catholic Schools Week and all that was going on and all the fun activities that were going on this week. Two key players in this event included Mrs. Blakeslee, the St. Andrews principal, she was the one who had organized the whole event. Another important key player was Mrs. Zamora who made the whole trip happen. Sophmore, Grace Geske, who went along on this trip stated, "As someone who went to St. Andrews from Preschool all they through eighth grade, it was really exciting to see how much the school has grown. The kids were so sweet and full of life. The teachers were very welcoming, especially Mrs. Blakeslee, the principal." These members enjoyed picking stickers and hand making bookmarks which encouraged them to read. When asking Allie Cook how she felt about the meeting she said "It was such a fun time and really created a bonding experience." The whole library club had fun talking about the stickers they would use and the books they would use these book marks on. Later on Lucas Simpson scored a lot of nice passes by Nolan Britt which continued to keep Newman in the lead. Newman also played a strong 1-3-1 defense that forced Trojans into many turn overs. Newman had great teamwork and sportsman ship. Nolan Britt said, "It's always special to get a win on Senior Night. You always see her walking around with a smile on her face. She has been working this job as a Secretary for 7 years going to be 8 in the summer. She is the perfect person to see as you step foot into the front of the school with a smile always on her face. McGinn has love for all the students here especially her daughter Ally. She had 2 other kids attend Newman, Ryan graduated in 2021 and Kaitlyn graduated in 2019. Ally is still attending as a sophomore. Mrs. McGinn says " I wake up and look forward to seeing these kids everyday." She also loves to decorate the front office for every holiday or season. They often meet to be trained on mental health, in order to be more equipped to welcome freshman and new students. The leaders filled out a questionnaire to find out which personality type they fit best. The four types were North, South, East, and West. North are confident and decisive, South are caring and communicating, East are logical and organized, and West are idea-centered and creative. Once they discovered which personality type they were, they split into those groups to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their leadership style. They also talked about what personality type is hardest for them to work with. For example, Sarah Murray, a South, mentioned, "I think North are hardest to work with because they tend to ignore people's ideas for the sake of progress." They ultimately concluded that being self-aware of their personalities can help them to split up tasks based on their strengths. A key part of this meeting was Mrs. Kelly, who got everyone together, and the leaders, for actively participating. Juniors Cater Rude (138) and Brady Grennan (126), got second place and will move on to Sectionals. Sophomores Briar Ivey (120), Daniel Kelly (145), and Jacob Newberry (195), all got third place and will be alternates for Sectionals. Coach Daryl Dieterle got honored for his years of coaching. When Coach Mags response to, How did the team feel coming out of Regionals and what will you be working on for Sectionals? "Well, after losing all of our matches in that final round, I'd say we were licking our wounds a bit. But, we are going to watch the film of our matches and focus on what we need to, to get our confidence back up. At this point of the season (the end), there's not a lot to change, we need to sharpen the tools that we have used all season in order to best our opponents." It was a close match, but the Newman girls walked away with the win. The final score was 42-37, Newman. A leader in the win was Jess Johns, who scored 18 points and snagged 21 rebounds. Madison Duhon followed her lead and earned 10 points and 4 rebounds. Freshman Lucy Oetting also stepped up and scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. This game would help Jess Johns on her way to be nominated for Sauk Valley athlete of the week for her performance this season. When asked how they will improve next year, Amiya Rodriguez said,

"Our basketball team this year didn't start off as well as we wanted, but as the year went on, we improved. It takes time and patience with everyone, and it's hard because we had a small team. Every other team we played had taller girls than us. It made it hard because we didn't really have the height besides Jess. Next year we hope to improve and be better than we were this year. We're supposed to be getting some good incoming freshmen, so hopefully next year we will have more subs for our wings up top. When we do get into foul trouble or someone gets tired or hurt, they are able to be taken out. Our goal from last year was to improve the next year, which I felt like we we did. We have the same goal next year, to do better than we did this year, which I feel like we can 100% accomplish."

As we started the week off we had a lot of big moments we had a special announcement From out Mayor Skip Lee that sister Marianne was award a proclamation on the 30th of January. Tuesday January 31st Students at Newman were given the chance to get Culver's ice cream at lunch to celebrate this special week. Each year we have Catholic schools week but we have not been able to do as much including the All schools Mass due to Covid. We where able to welcome all the schools together including Newman Central Catholic High School, St. Mary's of Sterling, St. Andrews of Rockfalls, St. Mary's of Dixon, St. Anne's of Dixon celebrated the final day of catholic schools week together. Our staff were very happy how it went and that we could do this. Jennifer Oetting principal of Newman Central Catholic High School Stated "Friday was a wonderful way to end our Catholic Schools Week. The Government classes got to spend time with the kindergartners all the way through the eighth graders. The students that were with the kindergartners and younger kids played Twister and Candy Land and the students who were with the seventh graders and eighth graders played Apples to Apples and Monopoly. There were many different key players throughout this event. Two important key players were Mr. Lemay and Mr. Koerner who were both in charge of helping get this trip to happen. This was a great opportunity for Newman students to see the younger students from the other feeder schools and get to know them. Brandy grennan and Carter rude are both Juniors at Newman. Carter Rude and Brady Grennan has advanced to the State tournament in champing this weekend. Carter rude made an appearance at the 2021-2022 state tournament as well as placing 6th and he will be making another appearance this weekend. Carter Rude was also named Sauk valley athlete of the month in January. These two boys have worked hard all season and deserves this opportunity. A key part of planning this trip was Mr. Koerner. He organized the trip, and he okayed it with Mr. Somers and the staff of St. Mary Sterling. Mrs. Selmi, the principal of St. Mary's Sterling, played a big part in agreeing to hosting the Newman students and assigning grade levels to each group. The students were each tasked with coming up with a theology-based activities to do with the school kids. They each came up with their own game or activity and approved it with Mr. Somers. The students came up with a trivia game, Jeopardy, and a guided coloring sheet. They also included a little information about Newman in their activities. This has been a big project for the theology department, and they will be going to St. Anne's, St. Mary's Dixon, and St. Andrew's in the coming weeks. Gianna Sagel said,

Even though it was a tough loss for the girls, they may have learned more from the loss than they would've learned from a victory. They've had a tough season with no seniors and a sudden coach change halfway through the season, but they hope to improve on their season next year. With a majority of the cast being Juniors it's a great opportunity for them to get closer to the underclassmen. With freshman Ryan Wetly as a lead (Linus), Sophomore Nathaniel Burger as a lead as well (Snoopy), and Freshman Hanna Britt helping teach choreography. The underclassmen are very involved and making friends with the upperclassmen. There were some pre-established friendships coming into the musical from years of going to school together or previous sports, but spending hours with each other day after day incredibly dependent on their cast-mates, not running scenes properly when even one person is missing really brings together the cast. Gianna Sagel says,

"...this musical has opened me up to a lot of friendships that I would not have formed otherwise..."

The objective of the roller coaster was to have a least one segment that went upside down. They had to make a marble get through the roller coaster with a loop. The physics class only has 8 students so there was two groups of four. Students went through many struggles trying to get the marble through without getting stuck. It looks a lot easier than it really is. There is much to take in consideration, speed, momentum, and direction. She had always grown up enjoying school, and having a parent as a teacher really gave her an inside look at what teaching was really like. She grew very close to her English teachers in high school, and she wanted to follow in their footsteps. She initially wanted to teach English, but she never thought that she would be teaching Journalism. Mrs Accardi said “Before this year she had never had anything to do with Journalism, I didn’t know what to expect teaching it.”

The Musical:

She wanted to keep the same feelings from when she did musicals, but also take into account that things have changed since the last Newman musical performed in 2019. We did change venues, as the show this year is at Sauk. We also are doing a show that Newman has never done before. It was interesting, because she had to change her perspective from that of a cast member in the show to the director. She reflected a lot on what the past directors did, what she enjoyed, and tried to combine those while also putting my own personal touch on it. It's a big responsibility and It has been stressful, but she has amazing staff members that are helping, and every time she watches our cast perform, it makes all the stress go away.

She also is considering helping coach cheerleaders since she was a cheerleader throughout her high school and college careers. Miss Accardi feels right at home at Newman with her dad, Mr. Accardi, as the athletic trainer and anatomy/health teacher. Her brother Chris is a junior at Newman. Miss Accardi was inspired to direct the musical because she saw a need for new life in the theatre program. There hadn't been a musical in three years because of the pandemic. She has a lot of theatre experience, and she really enjoyed her musicals at Newman. When asked what inspired her to want to direct the musical, Miss Accardi said,

"We were talking over the need for a musical director in a staff meeting, and Mrs. Verdick suggested that I do it. At first, I thought, "I'm only a first year teacher! I can't do that!" But, I went home and talked to my parents about it, and I wanted to be the one to be able to provide opportunities for young actors. I told Mrs. Oetting I would do it a day or two later. I'm really grateful I stepped up. I've loved seeing this show come to life."

It was a co-ed meet, meaning both boys and girls competed. There were 10 teams there overall. A key event was the boys' 4x800. There were four teams in the event, and the Newman boys won the event. The four runners were Kenny Boesen, Lucas Simpson, Lucas Schaab, and Wyatt Widolff. They ran the overall 2 miles in 8:40. Lucas Schaab also managed to run a 4:57 mile in the 1600, edging out all of his competition. Gianna Widolff also ran the 1600, and she placed 8th with a 6:55 mile, coming close to a PR. When asked how she felt about the meet, Gianna said,

"Friday was a good start to the season. We had some good competition. We have a big team this year, and I can't wait to see everyone's improvement through the season."

Sarah Murray, Claire Crisham, and Lucas Shaab all have different personalities when working on a project. These three students expressed their opinions on how they can collectively work together as one in a certain situation. They deserve as much love and appreciation as the football players do. All was going well and then all of the sudden one of the acts was asking for a volunteer. Wyatt raised his hand and then sat down in a chair and Newman student Isaiah Williams plugs in a hair clipper and starts to shave Wyatt's hair off. Wyatt says, "I was getting a hair cut later that week so my friends and I thought this would be a funny act to do at the talent show. After all my hair was shaved off I was shocked because I used to have so much hair and now it's all gone." Newman students were very shocked yet entertained by this act. While Wyatt was getting his hair shaved off, a few students were dancing in the background and it made everyone laugh. It was definitely a surprise to everyone, even the teachers. Senior Sarah Murray, a key player on the Salesian design team, said “ Our goal is to celebrate and highlight the creativity of Newman students, which we often feel is underrepresented in the Newman community.” When Sarah was asked what the Salesian was up to now, she replied with, “We just finished going through all of the submissions and now the design team, which is Sam, Monica, and I, are beginning to design the book.”

Levi Leap is important for the upperclassmen especially the sophomores. The money from all the tickets sold goes to the junior prom the next year. So the Levi Leap plays a key role in having a good junior prom. This year's theme is Levi Leap into the 80’s! MaryKay Downs is a member of the student council, and stated “We're working hard on making this year's dance super fun!” A few Newman students were asked how they feel about this year's Levi Leap and I've only heard good things. At first people were nervous, calling family and friends to make sure they were okay. Eventually, everyone was playing games and talking to pass the time. The Clinton meet is a very interesting meet as Iowa runs all of their meets differently. They add events and have a different order than typical Illinois meets. This meet is hard for the girls to adapt to because there are typically no recognizable faces. That didn't stop the girls from bonding and having fun together at the meet. Junior Brendan Tunink pitched six innings and Senior Nolan Britt came in for the seventh. Senior Jaesen Johns had two hits and an RBI. Freshman Garet Wolfe had one hit and one RBI.

When asked how it feels to beat Hall for the first time Johns says,

"It felt great. They are always a good team and it was a good test for us to see where we are at. It's a pretty big accomplishment for us."

The team plays Hall again Friday April 21st.

Mr. Sotelo who teaches pre-cal and the higher math classes. I think it is safe to say that Newman takes their math programs pretty serious.

This was a bittersweet event for many of the students, as they had a great year teaching the kids. Sadly, the main preschool teacher, Mrs. Atilano, was sick during graduation, so Mrs. Neubauer stepped up to fill her role. Mrs. Neubauer read a letter for each of the preschoolers heading to kindergarten and awarded them a certificate and a medal for all their hard work. Many parents and grandparents came to support their hardworking kids. The three Newman students in the class are Gianna Sagel, Laurel Chavera, and Kathleen Withrow. All the activities that were done throughout the day were very well pariticated by each and everyone one of those 140 students. All members of the student council gathered together to talk about summer plans and the 2023-2024 student council election. Everyone in the sophomore class that participated in student council this year ran for next year. Some new people from the sophomore class also ran for student council their junior year. An example being Makenzie Duhon, she said she wanted to participate so she could help run junior year prom and help her class as a member of student council.

These two athletes are sprinters so everyone was excited to see how it would turn out. Both runners started off strong. While running they had the whole girls team cheering for them. After the first mile, Rosengren decided she was unable to finish the 3200. Her teammate Claire Crisham helped her up and gave her water. Jess was still going and wasn't doing too bad. Jess finished with a time of 17.53. The whole team was impressed and proud of both athletes. Jess actually was able to receive All Conference! When asked about her experience Jess said, “I expected worse.”
