reasons for including text: 

Malala wrote a couple books surrounding her life and events that led her to being an inspiration to many women around the world. This book in particular is a picture book that makes it easier for younger students to grasp the story in a visual way. Additionaly, books written by the hero herself are so much more impactful than other books because it is told from her points of so this book is a powerful and strong representation of the story, as we learn it through her eyes rather than someone summarizing her story for us to learn about through someone else's eyes.

Hook text:

Sometimes getting students engaged in learning about historical figures can be hard, because it may be boring to them and/or not gear towards their interests. The idea of having a "magic pencil" in the book could make the students intrigued to read it because they want to know more about the magic pencil, and then through that they learn more about Malala in a more entertaining way to them. Also, being written by Malala herself, makes it feel more real because its being told through the figure's eyes rather than another authors eyes.

reasons for including text :

Dinah Brown's "Who is" biography collection, has always been a popular choice for elementary students to use and read, so I thought that this would be a good addition to my text set. These books always are good use for research if students need to do a project or assignment of some sort on a historical, in more specifics for this text set Malala Yousafzai.

reasons for including text:

Not only is For the Right to Learn beautifully illustrated, but the book mainly focus on her shooting incident in a gentle way that makes it kid friendly. By focusing primarily on the shooting incident and not her whole life from beginning to today, the students get an idea of how strong Malala truly is and her powerful dedication to fighting for women's rights in education. This book allows for the students to critically think about the situation and promotes discussion as they ask questions about why she got hurt.

reasons for including this text:

I included this video because alot of the videos that talk about Malalas life are not geared towards children, and so when I found this one and I watch I thought it did a good job of making it age appropriate and engaging for the kids through the illustrations.

reasons for including text:

I included this picture book because it tells more about her beautiful relationship she has with her father. When she was born, people looked down on her because she was a girl, and in this culture having a girl is seen as bad luck, but her dad loved her anyway. I think this book is an important representation of how women are treated compared to men in the muslim community and in Pakistan. Furthermore, I think that by giving this background information it gives the students a better understanding of how it must be more difficult for women in the music community and in more specifics Pakistanm, to achieve a high and equal education that is given more to men in the community.

I included the audiobook for one of my multimodals because I listened to this audiobook before and I remember how much emotion the reader was expressing, bring her writing to life in a different way that wouldn't have been done if the audience were to just read it on their own.

reason for including text:

I included her Nobel peace prize speech video because this was a big part of her life. Also, this speech and prize shows the important impact she has had on women's right and history in general.

visual text: The beginning of the target text jumps forward to her reciving the Nobel peace prize before going through the story. Using the video of her acceptance speech as the visual text may help support this text cohesion since it starts from the award she earned, and then goes back in time to explaining her story rather than the other way around. Also, the Nobel peace prize portion in the target text does not describe really any parts of her speech, so by showing this video students can get a feel for how big of an impact she has had on others through making a connection from what they read to her powerful words of her speech in the video.

reasons for including this text:

When looking at the preview online, this book is more of a graphic novel biography that tells about her life. Through observations I have learned, that children love graphic novels because of the engaging visuals and not that much test, they are just plain easy and fun. For this reason, I thought this would be a good addition to the text set.

reason for including text:

Along with the video of her presenting her Nobel peace prize acce3ptance speech, I thought it was important to also include the transcript as well of her speech. This way students can further see and analyze what she said and pick out lines important to them. Also, a lot of students, including me, sometimes need something to follow along with, so I thought this would be a good tool to add to the text set.
