The idea of having a "magic pencil" in the book could make the students intrigued to read it because they want to know more about the magic pencil, and then through that they learn more about Malala in a more entertaining way to them. Also, being written by Malala herself, makes it feel more real because its being told through the figure's eyes rather than another authors eyes.

Her story has shocked the world with her bravery and courage as a Pakistani women sticking up to the taliban.

The texts within this set, show her life story through her own eyes and the eyes of others.

It was fairly easy to find texts on Malala because of the impact she has on the world.

This is more of a heavy topic, make sure that your children are age appropriate. I would say this for higher elementary.

When she was born, people looked down on her because she was a girl, and in this culture having a girl is seen as bad luck, but her dad loved her anyway. I think this book is an important representation of how women are treated compared to men in the muslim community and in Pakistan. Furthermore, I think that by giving this background information it gives the students a better understanding of how it must be more difficult for women in the music community and in more specifics Pakistanm, to achieve a high and equal education that is given more to men in the community.

Learning Standard:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.3.1.D

Explain their own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.Grade level: Pre K-2

informational text: The target text fails to describe the components of the Islamic religion that these people practice everyday. Islam impacts their values and makes up their culture and everyday decisions they make. For example, clothing such as the hijab, is worn in respect for what the religion requires for them to wear. This is just one example of how the Islam religion shapes who they are and what they do. Since it is not described in the target text, I included this book including more information on it as the informational text to fill in these gaps, so that students have more of an understanding of how this is an important part of their lives and shapes their culture.
