Puritanism

Puritanism was a religious movement that happened in England in the late 1500s. This movements goal was to make a "utopia" where humans could live by God and the scriptures to set a good example and hopefully be found "elected". With people who are found "elected", they have been chosen by God himself to go to heaven while the others will burn in hell. With all the religion puritanism brings, this means that religion is power and is why government and religion are not separate.

The Proving of Witches

The act of proving a witch was very dumb when we look back on it now, but back then was the only option. One test is when accused witches were dragged to the nearest body of water, stripped to their undergarments, bound and then tossed in to to see if they would sink or float. if they sunk then they were not a witch, but still died of drowning, and if they float then they were a witch. They would also check for marks on the persons body where the devil might have stabbed them. While all of these tests were not the best, the main way a person was judged would be based of the young girls opinions and were soon seen as unreliable like the rest of these tests.

Calvinism emphasizes the grace of God and the doctrine of predestination which is the religion Puritans went too. Total depravity was a big part in Calvinism with the belief every person being sinful from the actions of Adam and Eve. This lead the people to try and make it up to God by forming a new society, but the witch hunts messed it up for them. While that was one of the Calvinism beliefs, another less brutal belief was Predestination. This was the act of God choosing who goes to heaven and not, but not based on there actions but just from God's choosing.

Crucibles are big concrete pots that are used for melting metals. While this piece of equipment was used for melting things and nothing to really do with witches, people might wonder why the play was named after this. The village of Salem was a strict puritan community, a container. While there people were stuck in a society like so, all tension was heated due to the witch trials. This caused the tension to rise up with the metal waste as witches and the people must dispose of them.

the witchcraft obsession began after young girls were exposed to Tituba and her "actual" witchcraft. After the police discovered this, Tituba told the people that there were more witches out there. This began the Salem Witch Trials which was the look for all things witch-like and punished it by death. There was a book a man had when he came into Salem with the names of "witches" and while Tituba could have named a couple of them, there will still a handful not named and caused people to accuse. While there were many who were falsely accused, there might have been a few like Tituba who might have dabbled in dark magic.
