One test is when accused witches were dragged to the nearest body of water, stripped to their undergarments, bound and then tossed in to to see if they would sink or float. if they sunk then they were not a witch, but still died of drowning, and if they float then they were a witch. They would also check for marks on the persons body where the devil might have stabbed them. Total depravity was a big part in Calvinism with the belief every person being sinful from the actions of Adam and Eve. This lead the people to try and make it up to God by forming a new society, but the witch hunts messed it up for them. While that was one of the Calvinism beliefs, another less brutal belief was Predestination. While this piece of equipment was used for melting things and nothing to really do with witches, people might wonder why the play was named after this. The village of Salem was a strict puritan community, a container. While there people were stuck in a society like so, all tension was heated due to the witch trials. After the police discovered this, Tituba told the people that there were more witches out there. This began the Salem Witch Trials which was the look for all things witch-like and punished it by death. There was a book a man had when he came into Salem with the names of "witches" and while Tituba could have named a couple of them, there will still a handful not named and caused people to accuse.
