We can create a joyful learning environment by taking time to tinker, which means to take them outside and let them enjoy the sunshine and the trees. Another "joy" we liked is giving students choice. In the article, "Joy in School," the author states "children have practically no ownership of their interests." We think it is important for children to have this free time to either rest, read, or do whatever their heart desires, especially being in a classroom for hours. The final "joy" we agreed on is to offer more gym and art classes. We believe that it is important that every student has the opportunities to explore their hobbies and passions. Not every student wants to be a lawyer or engineer. Some students want to be artists or athletes, and as educators, we should support and provide resources for our students to help achieve these goals.

1. Creating a joyful environment can stem from understanding behaviors and body language from the students. Joys 3, 4, and 6: letting students create things, letting students show off work, making school spaces inviting.
2. Teachers can modify work so students are not tasked with the same worksheet style assignments causing stress and lack of motivation.

Making classwork more interactive and giving kids time to go at their own pace when completing school work. The three Joys that stood out to us was take time to Tinker, give students a choice, and finding the pleasure in learning.

Some things that teachers can do to help a school's culture become more joyful is create a community within the school by making activities with the parents and the students. Some examples could be like performing plays or "muffins with mom" where mothers come to the school and have muffins with the children. Also, letting kids from the school have more recess time and letting them be kids and interact with other children.

1. Out of all of the "Joys" listed in the article, we liked #2 Give Students Choice, #3 Let Students Create Things, and #9 Offer More Gym and Arts Classes. We liked #2 because we believe giving the students choices allows them to make decisions for themselves. An example would be allowing your students to work in alternative location other than their desk. In return this helps build trust between the teacher and students. We liked #3 and #9 because it lets the students have a creative outlet which promotes individuality and self expression. We liked #4 because it inspires students to work hard and in return they'll be proud of their work. The recognition from the teacher motivates each student to do their best.

2. We feel like school should feel like a second home given how many hours per day children spend in a school environment. We believe incorporating more group work, physical exercise, and games would assist with making the school environment a more comfortable and joyful experience. Another example would be having an alternative to the normal desk and chair set up, such bean bag chairs, or floor seating, and/or a "sensory corner."

4. Having a classroom that is tough but fair while also fun can help teach responsibility and self accountability. While children want fun, they crave and need structure as well.

Erica, Stephanie, & Ramonee

Some things that teachers can do to help a school's culture become more joyful are to make school spaces more inviting, coming into the school with a positive attitude, and having fun together. The author emphasizes, "The walls of a classroom should speak to people" (Joy in School). We can make spaces more inviting by providing a stimulating environment with cozy hang-out spots, artwork and murals in the hallways, and a lot of colors. As a teacher, coming into work with a positive attitude is essential to providing a joyful environment. Although we are human, we must recognize children are observant and our crankiness will affect them, and lead to a lackluster classroom. Finally, we can bring joy to our school's culture by simply having fun together! School assemblies with entertaining but educating speakers and performances can make learning easier and more attainable to children who are easily bored in the classroom.
